It was dream come true for African Americans to see Barrack Obama winning the United States (US) election 2008. It was not less than a miracle to see a black president where persecution of African Americans was mere routine in recent past. The victory of Obama is something that is an out come of his polity which can be judged through his election campaign slogan of ‘Change we need’. It is true that US needs the change badly but will Obama and his fellows be able to offer that change? Very little can be said or judged at the moment.

It is believed by many that after 9/11, the US policy took a new turn. I can recall clearly to what were the statements of then President Bush followed by his doctrine of preemption. Iraq was attacked, followed by Afghanistan in the name of so called War against Terror. Such steps were welcomed by US citizens as well as many others since to then emotional nation it was the only viable option, the option to fight for so called freedom and die in the line of duty but time proved it otherwise. Now, it is widely accepted by many US nationals as well as spectators around world that their policy of preemptive attacks was flawed and it resulted in a damage that will require a great deal of time for repair. Though, this policy of insane confrontation pleased many like Donald Rumsfeld and other disciples of Leo Strauss termed neo-conservative but in the long run since this policy was unnatural so it failed to come up to the expectations of common US citizens. In the after math of this Vietnam like failure of US to get the required results in Iraq and Afghanistan, the support of Bush and his coteries started falling. This offered a window to Democrats and they made it to presidency once again with the dreams of a better tomorrow with change in American policies.

It will not be wrong to point out that US citizens were really looking for a change and when Democrats offered them the dreams of change, they ran after them but will those dreams see the day’s light? It is a difficult yet important question but in order to get the answer, we will have to wait and watch Obama work towards the fulfillment of promises he has made to his nation and world. Let us all see if he is able to bring the change he was professing for so long. Will he be able to curb the torture course adopted in Guantanamo bay Prison? Will he be able to bring the US troops back to home from Iraq? Will he be able to make us see the change? I wonder if it is possible but what else we can do than believing in dreams sold to us in the name of better tomorrow.

Lastly, it is worthy of mention that the war against terror is very important but the ways US and other nations are using to deal with this menace are not the right ones. In order to fight terror, one needs to fight the mentality behind it including the causes of such mentality. We can not cure the disease unless we treat the underlying cause similarly, the terrorism has a complex underlying cause that is multifaceted in nature and we need to take it in account before dealing it. Barrack Obama, appears reasonably sensitized to this issue and we hope we will do the homework properly before embarking upon some course and will not repeat the mistakes the others have done in past. I wish him all the very best and hope we will stay sane.

Two things are on my mind, one the movie, ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ by director of Gladiator, yes none other than Ridley Scot and the other one is a guest post at the blog of one of finest Pakistani Bloggers, yes none other that the famous Awab aka Teeth Maestro. I am taking up both in a bit detail.

Its 02:37 hrs and I am done with watching a wonderful movie named Kingdom of Heaven. This is sort of a movie I long for and I simply loved it. ‘You are not what you are born but you are what you have in you’, these are the dialogues that got stamped while watching this movie. I would say, I even was not in a mood to blink my eyes. I think I will watch it again some time soon. In this movie, the pride and dignity of men was highlighted. Not only this but the lead character appears to fight for common men in which he takes pride and it turned this movie into a fantastic watch. Moreover, I forgot to mention that I watched it using PTCL broadband’s internet entertainment portal. They have a fair collection of Hollywood, Bollywood, Lollywood movies, all time hit Pakistani Drama serials like ‘Sunahray Din’, ‘Chand Girhan’ and all sorts of music. I think I will explore more with them.

As soon as I was done with this movie, I thought to have a look at my Facebook account and there I found this news in my feed about this guest post titled “Pakistani Bloggers and Zardari: A suggestion for Both!”. The title was catchy so I couldn’t stop myself from exploring it further. Once I was there on Teeth Maestro’s blog, it made a good and thought provoking read. It is about the political situation in Pakistan, the role bloggers have been playing and what they need to do in future. It is sort of an editorial from the author named Silence who blogs at Islamabad Observer Blog. In this post the author has mentioned his analysis, his polity and has tried to influence the opinion of bloggers of Pakistani origin. His point is a bit valid but at times, my mind was clicking on something and I don’t know what was it but it felt like something is missing. Keeping these subjective thoughts apart, the writer has rightly pointed out that the ball now is in the court of President Zardari and he need to deal the problems of Pakistan according to the wishes and aspirations of Pakistani Nation. Apart from this he has also emphasized the need of Pakistani bloggers to play an active role.

At the moment, I am thinking that both movie and the post are related in some way. Let’s not go into the details. I am not in a mood of thinking too much at the moment and even don’t want to end this post beautifully, I would simply say good night and sweet dreams since I need to sleep too.

Ahmed Shaukat

Dear Ahmed Shaukat,

To me appearing in CSS is a separate decision from deciding the field of study. You must take in account to what will happened if by any chance you are going to fail in all the three attempts of CSS. Please don’t take it as an offence, I only want to point it out that at times things do not take the shape as we want them to take and in such a situation, your degree qualification will help you out. Therefore, please do not base the decision of your studies solely on CSS. I think you are carrying my point. I wish you all the very best for your future in your preferred field.

i am working with united nation peace corps.
i am happy but as desire and dream i always wanted to work as civil service officer .
what you suggest as i had master in IR from washington state university.

Atta

Dear Atta,

I am glad that you want to serve your country, but decision is all yours. In my personal case, I was serving in WHO international before qualifying CSS 2007 and I had many options but I preferred staying in Pakistan. In your case, it is all about your personal choice.

is it true that there is an age relaxation for two years and now a person can appear in the CSS exams till the age of 30.

Zainab

Dear Zainab

No it is a rumor!

i wanna ask u one thing that i am in the final year of d-pharmacy so the question is that i want to gv css exam after compeletion of d-pharmacy so is there any restriction regarding my degree plz do ans me soon im in a great worry

Hira

Dear Hira

No there is not restriction for details visit the CSS FAQs page.

Hello there Sir,

Iam a graduate in Business Admin, now doing my MBA and after lots of thought regarding my career.. I have come upon the decision of preparing for the CSS examination.
I need to inquire regarding two things, First being, iam a shortsighted girl, with an eyesight of -5.00 for both the right and the left eye, and I am interested in the Foreign services field, am i not eligible for it because of my eyesight?

and secondly, I dont agree with having to cram history, why doesnt the board think of revising the syllabi and on the whole make it more intellectual based?

Many Thanks.

Moomal Ahmed

Dear Moomal,

You are o.k for Foreign services of Pakistan being short sighted. You can take a look at the precedent of Saima Saleem, who is blind and passed the CSS 2007 and is allocated with a seat in Foreign Services of Pakistan. About FPSC revising the Syllabus, this is long discussion and beyond the scope of this post, so we can discuss it latter or you might consider writing a guest post in this context for my blog. I wish you all the very best.

Salam !
Can Any1 plz temmi sum information regarding CSS classes or coaching centers in Peshawar?

Anna

Hasnain Zaidi

Dear Hasnain Zaidi,

You need to stick around with your routine of reading daily dawn and your word power will built progressively and you will come to understand every word of it in long run. About map, all you need to do is that when you read some news of some foreign country, kindly see if you can find it on map, once you have found it on map, have a look at the boundaries of the country and other countries bordering it. About contact of Prof. Mehdi Hassan and Jafri Sahab, I have not clue.

Everybody is aware of the video posted at YouTube. At times, the content is something rare and to many it might be something that took a life time to search and find it. The next thing after finding is to download and in this post I will try to explain few ways amongst many on downloading the content from YouTube. Having got hold of your favorites at YouTube, you wanted to download the stuff and for that purpose several sites are available online. I have kept experimenting with few of them and I was happy with the results. Having done all this, I feel like sharing my experience with those who want to download YouTube videos and then convert them to some other format of their choice.

Downloading a video from YouTube is simple and just a few clicks away. You can choose the site of choice for the purpose. I personally find this site useful for YouTube downloads. Up till now, I have found no server busy messages and things like that. All you need is a YouTube video URL and you are set to go. Below is the screen shot of the site I am referring:

In the above screen shot you can see the space like an address bar of your browser; it is there for putting YouTube URL. The YouTube URL can be found at the YouTube Video page or in your browser’s address bar is the URL of Video you are playing. The screen shot below will make the things clearer:

The two places I have encircled above are the places where you can find the URL of the video you are playing. Once you have it, you can put the URL in the site, I have mentioned above for download. It will take sometime to process the requested and you will be prompted to save the content. Yes, it is the YouTube Video you wanted. Once you have downloaded it, you will find that it is in .FLV format (the flash video format). If you are o.k. with it, you need to go ahead with other download but if you want it in .mp3 or such other format, you need to have video conversion software. I have searched about it too and found a good deal of for the purpose. To me personally, Kingdia is at par. I have found it very good. Apart from it, if you want to extract the audio, you can do it as well by using this site named FLVTO for audio extraction and that too in .mp3 format. They are running it for free with third party advertisement revenue and donations of many affording users. They have set this page for raising money to run FLVTO for user like me. The great thing about FLVTO is that that you can convert by uploading a file from your computer too.

Once you are done with it, you can convert your favorite video and audio to .3gp format for viewing it on the mobile. I practically did it with my Nokia converter and the quality was at par with original at YouTube.

I think, by now you are ready to download YouTube Videos, change the Formats of Video you have downloaded and extracting Audio from downloaded Video.

Dear Dr. Farrukh:
I have recently passed Masters in Economics in First division and B.Com in second division both from the University of Peshawar. I would like to appear for the CSS exams in 2009. Please let me know:
From where to obtain application forms in Peshawar and on which date
Of the following three, which would be most suitable for me:
District Management Group (DMG)
Foreign Services of Pakistan (FSP)
Accounts group
I am also undergoing certification course from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK and have cleared five papers.
Your guidance would be highly appreciated
Rizwan Arif

Dear Rizwan Arif,

The application forms are available at the provincial and regional offices of Federal Public Service commission. For details and address of these offices at their website of Federal Public Service commission can be accessed here. About which group can be good for you, I would say it is a matter of personal choice. To me Police Service of Pakistan was at par for others other groups can have that place. You need to ask this question from your good self. Good luck.

Is it neccessery to visit an academy.

Aslam Shah

Dear Aslam Shah,

In my point of view reading text books can be enough to appear in CSS rest everything has the relative importance and it varies from individual to individual. One can not generalize anything same is the case with going to academy for preparation. I went, many of my friends went to one or the other academy, I passed, many others passed and many failed too so it is not a rule that one should go to some academy. To me, it is best decision I ever too, I learnt a lot. Now it is going to be your personal choice. If you can prepare at your own there is nothing better than that. I wish you all the best.

dear sir,

Dear Khurram,

The choice of method for preparation varies from individual to individual and I can not answer this question completely. I can only suggest or answer it relatively. In my point of view, it is all about your ability and choice. In my case, I opted for an academy for 2 and a half months and after that I was set to go. I would suggest you that you must consider your limitations and possibilities and then decide. About academy in Islamabad, please visit FAQ section of this site and you will find a page with list of academies and tutors around. I wish you all the best.

I am a final year student of chmical engineering. I have heard that one cannot take the css exam in the same year one completed the degree. Is it true?
Also tell me which is the best time for me to take up css exams as I am supposed to complete my degree by the upcoming March.
Can I continue preparing for css during the job afterwards? or it will be better to join the academy? Please reply early and thank you in advance

Azeem Khan

Dear Azeem Khan,

One can appear in CSS as soon as he is graduate no such bar exist as mentioned by you in your query. Best time to do CSS is every one’s personal decision same is the case for you. About joining an academy, again it is matter of personal choice. I wish you all the best.

i really need ur words in this situation coz i dont wanna end up as a laughing stock for these people infact i wanna have the last laugh of it..

Shoaib Abbasi

Dear Shoaib Abbasi,

I can very well understand to what you might be going through. I have seen many good fellows of mine who succumbed to such remarks and in fact if they had fought back they would have been the victors so don’t worry. I know one thing that those who are not afraid of going uphill and fight the winds stay successful in long term. No matter, what they say, stay focused and you will win. One more thing you must know, in case you are not able to make it to CSS, you still have life. Think about it and you will come to know that there are many good even better than CSS options are available. Apart from it, at the moment you need to focus and you will achieve what you want to achieve Inshahallah. Good luck!

Wikipedia defines fusion music as a genre which combines two or more genres of music. Apart from it, to many old and new musicians, fusion has the meaning in a sense that it combines, two or more, different musical traditions. For example, the musical tradition of East combines with west to and the kind of music then created, can be termed as fusion. There are many different examples like Abida Parveen and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani music legends who are known widely for their Sufi music have done a great job in producing fusion of different musical tradition predominantly eastern Ragas and western instruments. Another such example can be found in this video by Ancient Culture (AC). According to AC, “the main melody is set in Rag Alhaiya Bilaval. However, the sitar improvisation flirts with Khamaj and even blues. It is world fusion music.”

I came to know about Fusion Music during my medical school days and I really was impressed with the stuff. Latter, the Pakistani Mekal Hassan band captured my heart and I am one of its fans. At the moment, Shafqat Amanat, the able son of Pakistani Musical Maestro Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, is producing quality stuff. Recently, the teen sensation named Coke Studio, started as media campaign for Coke in Pakistan is quite popular. The other day I happened to listen to Tufail Ahmed Sanjrani (now popular as Saen Tufail) and Ali Zaffar performing for Coke Studio. I was impressed with the moving and mesmerizing impact of their trach though the music arrangement had the colors from Khuda Ka Liya Film’s track Allah Hu and the famous Sultan Bahu’s Sufi tune of Alif Allah.

This genre named Fusion that has taken birth out of mixing of two of more genres and in cases music traditions has proved very good and I think it will go on and it needs to go on for the music lovers like me.

I think many music lovers must be aware of this legendary singer and actress named Googoosh (alternately spelled Gogosh, Googosh or Gougoush). I happened to see her album first time when I was a student of High School in car of principal of my college Prof. S. M. Yusuf. Latter, I came to listen to her actually and started loving her.

Googoosh was born ‘Faegheh Atashin’ on 5 May 1950. She had a talent of singing and when her father came to know about her talent, he helped her to get to performing and she is considered one of the famous singers of the time. She also did act in movies but she is widely celebrated more a singer than an actress.

Iranian Islamic revolution brought an end to solo female singing in Iran and this resulted in a ban on her singing too. She did not sing till 2000 and latter in 2001 on the occasion of Norouz she performed in Dubai. Googoosh’s first album released after her return was Zartosht (Zoroaster); she has had four more record-breaking albums since then, including QQBangBang, Last News, Manifest, and Shabe Sepid with Mehrdad Asemani released in March of this year. I would like to share the following song from her recent singing. I think she has the same old charisma that she had before Iranian revolution of 1979.

Pakistan is passing through a difficult phase of its history. BBC reports that Pakistan is facing fiscal pressure due to wider trade deficit in wake of transport strike. The New York Times writes that Foreign exchange reserves have shrunk to $5.7 billion, with only about $3 billion available to cover payments for oil and food. Moreover the foreign exchange has decreased to record. Consequently, Moody’s, the international credit rating agency, cut Pakistan’s credit outlook from “stable” to “negative” on Tuesday, citing dwindling foreign exchange reserves, risks from extremists and high inflation. This situation is increasingly worrisome for political leadership and intelligentsia. In this sorry state of affairs, the formation of Friends of Pakistan by President Asif Ali Zardari is under discussion.

It is being reported that, Friends of Pakistan is a brain child of President Asif Ali Zardari that got materialized on September 26, 2008 with its inaugural ceremony held on the occasion of 63rd General Assembly Meeting of United Nations Organization.

The idea initially was floated by President Zardari and was finalized in a meeting at 10 Downing Street London between President and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In this meeting both the leader agreed upon its launch on the auspicious occasion of UN General Assembly meeting at New York, US and Prime Minister Gordon Brown assured his full support to Pakistan.

It is being quoted by media that inspiration of formation of friends of Pakistan Group came from a similar group named Friends of Afghanistan (FOA) locally named as ‘Dostan Afghanistan’ that is affiliated with National Peace Crops association (NPCA) based in Washington DC, US. National Peace Corps Association was established in 1961 and was incorporated in 1983 and it has 130 affiliate groups working in 134 developing countries. Apart from this two other groups with similar name, ‘Friends of Pakistan’ are functional. One of them is part of Association of Pakistani Professionals and has 40 chapters in US, Canada, Europe and Pakistan. The second group with the name Friends of Pakistan is an affiliate of NPCA like FOA. Here, it is important to note that none of these groups have backing of Government.

In aftermath of dialogue between President Zardari of Pakistan and British PM Brown, the launching ceremony of FOP took place on Friday September 26, 2008 at New York. The ceremony was attended the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, representatives of China, the European Union, the United Nations, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari. This launch was co-chaired by President Zardari.

Hours latter, a statement from US state department was issued from Chairman of Friends of Pakistan Group. This statement gives the details of agreements that Friends of Pakistan will help Government of Pakistan in five sectors namely, stability, development, border areas, energy and institution building. Further, it was told that the group will meet in month’s time at Abu Dhabi to discuss the measure required to achieve the goal.

Soon after launch, President Zardari, Secretary Rice, Secretary Miliband and UAE Foreign Minister Abdallah bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan spoke with media. “I hope that the President and the Pakistani people were assured today that the international community will be by their side as they take difficult decisions and move toward a more stable and prosperous Pakistan”, Said Secretary Rice. When a question was asked about financial assistance to Pakistan She pointed out the US is engaged with Pakistan through Financial Institution (IMF, WB and ADP). “Every single one of our countries stands shoulder to shoulder with the Government of Pakistan, the democratically elected Government of Pakistan, and the people of Pakistan in their struggle against terrorism which is a threat to them as well as a threat to us.”, remarked Secretary Miliband. “We fully back Pakistan. The UAE has been a very close ally, friend in Pakistan. But we want to further our relationship with Pakistan. We want to show our Pakistani friends and brothers our commitment towards them.” said Foreign Minister Al Nuhayyan. President Zardari thanked the dignitaries, “I look at U.S. support as a blessing. I look at the world support as a blessing to Pakistan.” remarked President Zardari.

‘Friends of Pakistan group’ is under discussion among political analyst at the moment. Questions are being raised about its success. In the first meeting no pledge of grant in aid was promised though Secretary Rice gave a clue that US will not engage with Pakistan directly but will work through international financial institution but this support was conditional too. The conditions Secretary Rice was talking will not be new. Pressure on Pakistan is mounting and it is multicentric. In such a situation I wonder if Pakistan has any other option left except to succumb to the demands of so called ‘Friends of Pakistan’. As President Zardari said that he is not asking them to give us fish but want to learn how to fish but leaning fishing from US and fishing for them can cost a lot because at times they hunt for big Fishes like Laden and Saddam! At the moment, the things are not yet clear and it is no time for prediction. The sky will get cleared once the first meeting is takes place as scheduled in Abu Dhabi.

It is reported that a suicide bomber hit Marriot Hotel in Islamabad Pakistan and at least 40 are dead and 70 reportedly injured. More deaths are suspected.

Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan. It is told that the this area is sensitive since many high profile figures use to live in the area. Apart from this Marriot Hotel is the five star hotel and it is a routine that many foreigners use to stay there. It is reported further that at this moment, the hotel was a hosting a World Bank delegatation.

The attacks follow the speech of President Asif Ali Zardari to joint session of Pakistani Parliament where he reaffirmed his resolve to continue war against terror.

Analysts believe that War on Terror is without ownership that is why Pakistani government is not able to mobilize the public opinion in their favour. Apart from this, attacks by US drones in Pakistani areas bordering Afghanistan has raised strong sentiments amongst Pakistani against US. President Zardari is set to visit US so it is being expected that he should carry a strong message to US where he should make it clear that Pakistan is face enemy on both sides.

It is reported that Marriot Hotel is an old structure and it can collapse any time. For rescue operation in wake of collapse of building, Army Engineering Core is on standby.

It is reported by GEO TV that around one ton of explosive was used by the suicide attackers. Most of the dead and injured are security men and other by standers. Fours German Citizens are among injured.

I being Pakistani National condemn this terrorist activity.
