In this book, Prof. Fields has tried to offer his understanding of Human Rights. To him, the said book is more a discourse on the subject that leads to a solid definition of Human Rights. In this context, he writes, “It would defeat the purpose of both this chapter and the entire book to a priori define human rights”. Moreover, through out the text, he appears following the pattern of presenting theories of prominent social scientists from history, patching in his own understanding of those concepts and theories, building his ideas and coming to conclusion. This leaves the text very interesting and offers us a unique understanding of the subject; Prof. Fields calls it the ‘Holistic Conception’ of Human Rights.

The Holistic View of Human Rights presented by Prof. Fields stands out unique on the ground that it rejects making one single value or the concept, the foundation of Human Rights. In this regard, the author writes, “I offer a different way of thinking about Human Rights from those discussed; one that rejects making a single value or concept the foundation of human rights. This is what I call a ‘Holistic’ way”. In pursuit of presenting his Holistic Conception of Human Rights, he has given a series of eleven propositions and they are meant to offer ground work for understanding of Human Rights in new light. Consequently, the concept of Human Rights appears expanding to a newer level. To Prof. Clinton of Baylor University, the most important of these propositions is that the humans have a right to whatever is necessary for their full development as persons—physical, intellectual, emotional, and social. Further, as we go down the line with these propositions, we come across the fact that this approach to subject tends to encompass those elements as well that influence the Human Rights and were never considered significant previously. In this regard, Prof. Fields has the argument that his view would strip human rights of all cross-cultural relevance.

The idea presented by Prof. Fields appears expanding the mandate of human rights and includes many a new actors. Say for instance, as mentioned by Prof. Clinton of Baylor University, “defining human rights by the test of “social recognition” expands them beyond what might be accepted as coming from divine gift in any one religious tradition, or what has been agreed to under positive international law. Enlarging the list of potential human rights violators beyond the governments of states, to include other individuals not acting under color of official authority and other kinds of organizations, such as paramilitary groups, increases the number of occasions on which those adversely affected may make human rights claims. Including economic and social rights in addition to civil and political rights makes it possible to consider many forms of deprivation through domination beyond the ones identified in the liberal tradition that Fields finds inadequate”. Hence, this holistic approach finds its way as something very essential for the recent times when social and cultural dynamics are changing and past traditions are inadequate to cater the needs of modern times. Here, it is worthy of mention that this stand point has serious problems too and one need to take them into account.

Though, the holistic conception of human rights has offered a new horizon that brings an entire new batch of issues under the umbrella of the said subject but, it carries with it practical problems for governance. In this regard, Prof. Clinton thinks that ‘If every political dispute becomes defined as a deprivation of the human rights of one or more of the (individual or collective) parties, the role of bargaining and compromise would seem likely to shrink. Human rights are not to be trifled with, or to be a made a matter of more or less depending on the power and skill of one of the parties to the bargain. They are too important, too foundational, to be treated as interests; as Fields notes, they form both rights and duties. Still, not every dispute turns on the human rights of those involved. Some are honest differences of opinion. Others, particularly in the political realm, are contests over power. Some are the results of misunderstandings. It is the task of politics, and especially that form of politics known as diplomacy, to reach some accommodation between the contending parties that does as little damage as possible to the bargaining realm –the network of norms, customs, and understandings that legitimizes and even encourages bargaining instead of warfare over international disputes’. Consequently, things will rather end up in chaos. It is here, one finds the theoretical weaknesses in the concept presented by Prof. Fields.

When we look at the mandate of human rights in the light of holistic view of Prof. Fields, we find it too broad to stick to it practically. Apart from this, the other problem with the said definition of human rights is its illimitability. Prof. Clinton in this context says, “There is almost nothing that, under certain circumstances and in some measure, might not contribute to the human development of some persons. To make all of these goods human rights is to make human rights co-extensive with all of human activity. Instead of serving as a common floor, above which particular political systems may make further provision in the form of constitutional and legal rights, and individuals may through effort secure for themselves yet more extensive contractual rights, human rights become the whole”. Once, definition of human rights is over stretched to such a level, it losses its clarity and meaning and ‘and is deprived of usefulness in distinguishing the phenomenon it describes from other aspects of the subject under study’.

In the last, it can be established that the attempt by Prof. Fields to define the human rights and his holistic approach is at par. Since every concept carries some weaknesses so is the case with the concept presented by the author in this book. In the words of Prof. Stephen Eric Bronner of Rutgers University, “A. Belden Fields has performed a remarkable feat: he has shown us in this book that there is still something to be learned about human rights. Sensitive, provocative, and eminently readable, it offers a new perspective on an old idea that will undoubtedly prove beneficial for anyone interested in developing a progressive politics for our time”.

Stanley Wolpert is a American Historian who specializes in history of India and Pakistan. He has a Ph. D. from in history from Universiy of Pennsylvania and teaches at University of California, Los Anegels.

In this very well written book, the author has given the major highlights of Pakistan’s political history in context of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. While reading this, one can carry many different impression and in my case, I came to conclude one important generalization in the life of Bhutto that Zulfiqar Bhutto was impulsive in his nature and stubborn fellow with a certain amount of arrogance that offered him extremes of self confidence. This was his weakness and his this weakness was his strength that happened to be his secret of rise as well as fall.

In last, I would say that this book is worth worth an addition to the library of those who are interested in History of Pakistan. I loved the way it is written and would like to recommend it since it can prove a very good source of understanding of Pakistan.

The team adgridwork claims that adgridwork has served over 157,523,774 impressions across 63,563,077 page views. Our network currently consists of 16,235 unique websites and is growing daily. Having know it, I out of curiosity, thought to give it a shot. I joined it in no time and installed the code. The ads were having a cool appearance like any other paid service but after running it for some time that was spread over few weeks, I came to the conclusion that it is of no use to me because of two reasons:

1. Visitors of my blog were not particularly interested in it any way.
2. It was not generating any substantial traffic for my site too.

After such an experience, I started thinking on the why portion of this outcome. Having brainstormed a good deal with friends and others around, I came up with following reasons of its failure:

1. adgridwork is a network of websites and blogs that is for free and many users are not established enough to generate substantial traffic for themselves so what to talk of traffic generation for others?
2. Since this service is there for free so blogs and website tend to ignore it by putting it in some far corner of their visible web space ending up with no or small number of clicks.

To me these were two main reasons. If you feel like you can comment on it too. Before ending my post, I would say, after reading claims of adgridwork and testing it with my blog, I can say that it can offer a helping hand to emerging bloggers by generating much needed traffic but for established bloggers, it is like filling the precious ad space for nothing.

In this article, The Pakistani Spectators (TPS) remarks that Cat is coming out of bag when it talks about Asif Zardari showing his want for the post of PM. Further, TPS feels that a huge fissure is there in PPP cadres. The writer may be true but I think up till now the things are going fine within PPP. Apart from this, in the same article, the TPS has pointed out that Makhdoom Ameen Fahim was not in the first press conference of Mr. Zardari at Naudaro. It may be true but I would like to point it out here that most important event then was of the announcement of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as the party’s new chairperson and in that Makhdoom Amin Faheem was one of those who lead it in fact he started the conference and endorsed the move. I would like to add my personal opinion in this regard, to me in the wake of Benazir’s assassination, many things are not going that great in PPP high offices but lets adopt a wait and watch policy. One of the front liners in PPP said to me some time back and I would quote, “After the death of Benazir, it was for the first time that party started thinking without her” yes, he was right when he said this, it is for the first time that party has started thinking independently. To me it’s the most important phase of PPP and let the natural process take course and I am confident that a democratic PPP will be much better than what it is now.

My professor of journal Dr. Mehdi Hassan used to say that Army in Pakistan is the only institution that is disciplined and it provides them edge hence they are ruling. He is right to point it out that Army is strong and I keep thinking about why? Why political parties are not that strong? Is it only this discipline or something? Well answer can be found with Zahra Naqvi in this post when she writes, “Military has taken over the charge in the country because other institutions are not so strong to stand against them. I do believe that military never let political parties to strengthen and be active and efficient component of governance”. He was not only a sagacious general but he was someone with a taste for literature and fine arts and one can’t complete the history of Babar without recognizing this aspect of his personality. When I happened to read this piece by Green Sufi at Pak tea House about the apathy of so called city dwellers when it comes to trees, I felt like my soul speaking it all out. I loved the way he has taken up this very important issue that stays of little concern to many. My heart goes out to him when he is advocating the trees and greenery in general through this write up. Here, I would like to share my experience, I am from Sindh Pakistan and being a resident of Karachi, when I went to Lahore and stayed there for few months, I was very much impressed with the parks but as soon as I was back, I started missing them all and have the same craving to date. I last, I would say, Green Sufi has done a great job by voicing his concern over this important point that we need to understand. He is very right in saying that trees are blessing.

The Islamic calendar starts with the month of Moharram. Besides being the first month of the Islamic calendar, Moharram marks the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) in the battle field of Karbala. It was Karbala where this grandson of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) sacrificed his life to uphold the truth against lies prevalent. He paid the price of being pious with his blood but never traded his principles. This post at Jahane Rumi by Syed Salman Chishty is a tribute to this great martyr of Islam who was killed by the troops of Yazid. In this post, the writer has taken up the different aspects of this event of historical significance. I was happy to see him quoting verses from poets like Anees and Iqbal. Not only this but he has tried to put forward the aspect of passive resistance of Hussain against Yazid, in this context he has quoted Mahatma Gandhi who once said, “I learnt from Hussain, how to be oppressed yet victorious.” In the last, I would say that this post is must read kind of stuff.

The power crisis in Pakistan is a sour reality. It is reported that we are short of around 3000 megawatts. This situation has manifested itself in form of power failures and load shedding even in cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. This witty post with its candid remarks hit my eyes while browsing through The Pakistani Spectator. It was from Ghazala Khan who was trying to answer the very important question, to what was the purpose of President Musharraf’s visit to Europe? Her remarks about this visit were remarkable. I enjoyed this piece a lot when she wrote, “Condy, the beautiful perhaps replied justifiedly first time in her life to this by saying, “Should one be obsessed with the rights of human beings to live in freedom? Maybe so?” But then all of a sudden she recalled the glaring face of Bush the Crusader, and hastily added, “Oh, I understand Democracy isn’t born in a minute.” While reading this post, I kept thinking that how true it is but our Silence is reality too, until and unless, we are not stepping ahead, we are bound to suffer that way.

Phil appears interested in posting about Bhuttos a lot especially after the assassination of Benazir. This write up about the comments of Fatima Bhutto, the daughter of Mir Murtaza Bhutto, is one such post on Phil’s canvas. Here I would say that I have found quite a good number of Pakistanis who are trying to promote the pseudo-intellect of Fatima Bhutto who is no more a lady who tries to mould the things in a way that is fruitful to her selfish concerns. Previously, I use to see her differently; to me she was someone who can offer sort of a hope to the nation but her activities these days are hitting her reputation negatively. Her recent comments to CNN, slamming former PM of Pakistan and her aunt, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is one such example when she wants to gain mileage out of controversy. I can understand her grief when she speaks of death of her father, I can understand the way she is pointing out the inert flaws of government of Benazir but the thing that pinches a lot is her style of saying all this and it is something that is not said and done in a good faith. Apart from this, I found a very interesting comment from seasoned blogger and a friend Raza Rumi on this post and I feel like quoting it here too, “And what about Fatima’s party- headed by her step mother. Is it not the case of dynastic politics? Strange double standards –“

The death of the great artist Ismail Gulgee was a real shock to the art lovers all over the world. He was a person who spent all his life painting and proved himself someone who left the standards behind. He was a standard. He is best known worldwide for his abstract work, which was inspired by Islamic calligraphy and was also influenced by the “action painting” movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In this column, Zia Mohyeddin at Baithak (this column was written for Daily Jang originally) proposes a national theatre and in its support he says, “Theatre and myth help us to understand the mysteries of life — birth and death, love and hate, revenge and forgiveness.” To him the national theatre will stage quality dramas and actors will be seasoned and very well trained. In this context he writes, “The National Theatre will have a permanent company of the best trained actors appearing in a wide repertoire of first-rate plays. This is bound to set up a chain reaction that will encourage a grid of subsidized smaller theatres in other cities.” Nice idea but here I want to put forward one thing. Today, while chatting with a public servant friend of mine who has experience of working in private sector too, I asked about the difference between private and public sectors. His response was interesting, he said that in private sector you need to work a lot and get paid for what you do but in public sector, you can earn more than you worth; in fact public sector is best for those who don’t know how to work. Now let’s project this experience of my friend on the proposal of Mr. Zia Mohyeddin who is advocating the national theatre and other subsidized outlets of art. If for instance, such a national theatre is started, how things will be? A Minister might send a third rate actor with his chit for accommodating him as a permanent performer among others, how one will ensure quality then? If he gets to the position of director, will he be worthy enough to direct any play of Intzar Hussain? I think never. So, what to expect out of a national theatre in Pakistan? I think, in its place, what we need is an initiative from civil society and only then we can make some difference. If we go the way proposed in this column with conditions like that of our country, any such theatre will be no more than subsidized theatre claimed as first rate but quality will be on the contrary.

For many the death penalty should not be there. The debate about is on for years and one can find it going back in history for quite sometime. Both groups, in favor and against the abolishing of death penalty have their logical arguments. Shakir Lakhani has also taken up this question of abolishing death penalty in this post at Chowrangi. He appears favoring the notion that death penalty is no good and he has his own reason to believe so.

It seems a very simple question but indeed very difficult to answer when one sees it in context of ideology of Pakistan. History tells us that Muslims of subcontinent demanded Pakistan on the basis of religion Islam and all the constitutions of Pakistan to date highlighted the Islamic nature of the state but Quaid-e-Azam clearly mentioned in one of his speeches in initial days that in the nation state of Pakistan, the religious matters will not be a cause of discrimination but it is observed that the concept of minorities still exist. This post at Light within is written in context of Pakistani bloggers who are deprived of Pay Pal account. It can serve as a very good guide for all the bloggers interested in monetizing.

Porn…when I wrote this word, I was thinking to keep my tone neutral since talking about porn industry here is still considered a taboo. I wonder why it is so when it is a reality in Pakistan. It is rightly pointed out in this post by Amna Gilani in this post at The Pakistani Spectator that these internet shops are fast replacing snooker clubs and video game shops and mini cinema houses because people around are aware of its utility as something that offers the porn stuff. Is it due to our ignorance or something else? I think, it is an out come of this general frustration prevalent around due to sex starvation. Some time back I wrote that sexual gratification is one of the important considerations around for every human being as an animal in its essence so if this is suppressed it manifest itself in form of such reactions including but not limited to use of internet for watching porn stuff or in severe cases rapes and so on. You can find two posts in this connection on my blog; one that of rape case of a seven years old girl Lacho Koolhe and other about the illicit relations between teachers and students in educational institution.

This post by Akhund at Ghoraba caught my eye due to its catchy title on Bloggers Pakistan saying that Free will of Bengalis was considered threat and it found the blogger linking it to condition of present situation with Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP. When I clicked it, I found the famous six points of Shaikh Mujeeb. This post was a reprint of those points without any commentary from the blogger. I think blogger wanted to give the choice to its readers for drawing any conclusions out of it. I think by doing this blogger has left a lot of space and it would have been much better if he would have written a line or two to give his point of view.

The Islamic month of Moharram marks the incident of Karbala in which the grand son of Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S) is considered a symbol of revolutions and marks the traditional fight between good and the bad. This post at Ronin by aMmAr is about Horr who was part of Yazid’s army but left him to join Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S). From the post I gather that it is originally written by Dr. Ali Shariati, the famous Muslim Scholar. It gives an account of Horr in particular and Karbala generally. I found it very interesting and a piece worth reading.

Raza Rumi is one of the popular bloggers around and his circle of influence in blogsphere is far reaching. He maintains his own blog but his posts use to appear of many other blogs around. One such blog is Indian Muslim blog where his guest post is marked one of the best with that blog. You can read his selected and top ranked piece here.

Blogger Temporal in this post at Pak tea house speaks about the union of mind and heart. He starts his write up with poetry of Iqbal, the poet of East who says that words spoken from heart are stronger than others. When temporal quotes this, he tries to sound backing the notion that steps taken with love and kindness in good faith for the greater good of the populace are the most important acts. Through out the text of this article he has given the examples of notables both from history and present, including Budha and Abdul Sattar Edhi, who acted that way with the union of heart and mind or with their mind in heart. He concludes his post with the idea that people who think with mind in the heart or with the union of both the faculties are the hope for a brighter today and tomorrow. In last, I would say his write up is good and he has pointed this important aspect but I felt that the idea temporal want to float is not clear in this post, I think its is due to the brevity he want to observe or its my ignorance on the subject or something else but I felt an urge of one thing that this wonderful idea and the article requires a rewrite from the author.

The point of view of Phil is appreciable but he is speaking of Fatima Bhutto as a political leader that is not the case. She is not in politics at he moment and to call her a political leader appear premature.

In wake of all this, his private life at Oxford is talk of the town. People while commenting on him are forgetting that he is just a teenager who is living as other privileged teenager use to live.
