The first episode of third season of Coke Studio Pakistan went on air. Recently, the Coke Studio has claimed a great deal of audience in Pakistan. In the first episode, I happened to listen to Zeb and Hania’s latest song in Farsi (Persian). It was mesmerizing and I simply loved it. From composition to sound effects, specially the violin play was soothing. With a little bit of googling, got hold of the lyrics of the song and felt like sharing with you and I hope you will come to love it too:

Bibi sanam janem, anaar-e-sisstanem
My love, you are like the sweet pomegranate of Sistan

Ba darwazae tajh Quran jayee sanam janem
Your being borders on the divine, my love

How come it is possible that rock and pop music lovers are not aware of Beatles. They were from Liverpool, England their band off course Beatles was formed in 1960. During their career, the group primarily consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). To me and many of their lover, they were the trend setters that’s why they left behind the legacy, the beatles legacy though they dismantled some time latter but still they were and are the voice of century.

I use to think to what makes them so special and different from all. According to some music critics, it was their style, they way they clad and they way they sung. It made every one and anyone feel like associating with them. They were near to bone and flesh of their times and times to come. Yep; our times.

Apart from all this, the message they gave us was of love and peace. This makes them achieve the distinction. At the moment, when I am trying to pay them the tribute, I am not able to find appropriate words. This is the power of their voice and the impact the carry. Therefore, I would like to put it in the words of Derek Taylor who wrote in his book:

I have never seen anything like it. Nor heard any noise to approximate the ceaseless, frantic, hysterical scream which met the Beatles when they took the stage after what seemed a hundred years of earlier acts. All very good, all marking time, because no one had come for anything other than the Beatles…

Then the theatre went wild. First aid men and police – men in the stalls, women mainly in the balcony – taut and anxious, patrolled the aisles, one to every three rows.

Many girls fainted. Thirty were gently carried out, protesting in their hysteria, forlorn and wretched in an unrequited love for four lads who might have lived next door.

The stalls were like a nightmare March Fair. No one could remain seated. Clutching each other, hurling jelly babies at the stage, beating their brows, the youth of Britain’s second city surrendered themselves totally.”

And he is absolutely right. Lets take this song from them, ‘Don’t let me Down’. Well, I feel mesmerized. Look at the Lyrics:

Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.
Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.

Nobody ever loved me like she does,
Ooh she does, yeah she does.
And if somebody ever loved me like she does,
Ohh she does, yeah she does.

Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.
Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.

I’m in love for the first time.
Don’t you know it’s gonna last.
It’s a love that lasts forever,
It’s a love that has no past.

Don’t let me down, please, don’t let me down.
Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.

And from the first time that she really done me,
Ooh she done me, she done me good.
I guess nobody ever really done me,
Ooh she done me, she done me good.

Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.
Don’t let me down, don’t let me down.

I would say that, they were simply Splendid. Want to have a feel to what they were like. Here you go with their great work in following Video:

Wikipedia defines fusion music as a genre which combines two or more genres of music. Apart from it, to many old and new musicians, fusion has the meaning in a sense that it combines, two or more, different musical traditions. For example, the musical tradition of East combines with west to and the kind of music then created, can be termed as fusion. There are many different examples like Abida Parveen and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani music legends who are known widely for their Sufi music have done a great job in producing fusion of different musical tradition predominantly eastern Ragas and western instruments. Another such example can be found in this video by Ancient Culture (AC). According to AC, “the main melody is set in Rag Alhaiya Bilaval. However, the sitar improvisation flirts with Khamaj and even blues. It is world fusion music.”

I came to know about Fusion Music during my medical school days and I really was impressed with the stuff. Latter, the Pakistani Mekal Hassan band captured my heart and I am one of its fans. At the moment, Shafqat Amanat, the able son of Pakistani Musical Maestro Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, is producing quality stuff. Recently, the teen sensation named Coke Studio, started as media campaign for Coke in Pakistan is quite popular. The other day I happened to listen to Tufail Ahmed Sanjrani (now popular as Saen Tufail) and Ali Zaffar performing for Coke Studio. I was impressed with the moving and mesmerizing impact of their trach though the music arrangement had the colors from Khuda Ka Liya Film’s track Allah Hu and the famous Sultan Bahu’s Sufi tune of Alif Allah.

This genre named Fusion that has taken birth out of mixing of two of more genres and in cases music traditions has proved very good and I think it will go on and it needs to go on for the music lovers like me.

I think many music lovers must be aware of this legendary singer and actress named Googoosh (alternately spelled Gogosh, Googosh or Gougoush). I happened to see her album first time when I was a student of High School in car of principal of my college Prof. S. M. Yusuf. Latter, I came to listen to her actually and started loving her.

Googoosh was born ‘Faegheh Atashin’ on 5 May 1950. She had a talent of singing and when her father came to know about her talent, he helped her to get to performing and she is considered one of the famous singers of the time. She also did act in movies but she is widely celebrated more a singer than an actress.

Iranian Islamic revolution brought an end to solo female singing in Iran and this resulted in a ban on her singing too. She did not sing till 2000 and latter in 2001 on the occasion of Norouz she performed in Dubai. Googoosh’s first album released after her return was Zartosht (Zoroaster); she has had four more record-breaking albums since then, including QQBangBang, Last News, Manifest, and Shabe Sepid with Mehrdad Asemani released in March of this year. I would like to share the following song from her recent singing. I think she has the same old charisma that she had before Iranian revolution of 1979.

Baavari piya ki – (6-times)
(Deewani Piya ki)
Kaase kahe jaake peer jiyaaki
(Apnay man ki pera (takleef) akhir kisay bataye)
Baavari piyaa ki – (2-times)
(Deewani Piya ki)
Piyu rang man ki chunar rangaai – (2-times)
(Apna mehboob ka rang sa man ki chunri rangwa le)
Piyu piyu rath ke piyu mein samaai
(Apnay mehboob ko yaad kar kar ka mehboob ma sama gaye)

Ban gayi chhaayaa – (2-times)
(Reh gai wo bus ik parchai)
Chhal baliyaa ki
(Us jado karnay walay ki)
Baavari piyaa ki – (4-times)
(Deewani Piya ki)

Itha utha dekhe panth nihaare – (2-times)
(Yahan wahan doodhte rahe, Rastay takte jaye)
Har din palchhin naam pukaare
(Har din har pal naam pukaray)
Sud nahin bisare – (3-times)
(Us ka khayal ka bhoolta he nahin)
Man basiyaa ki
(Jo man ma basa ha)
Baavari piyaa ki – (4-times)
(Deewani Piya ki)
Kaase kahe jake peer jiyaaki
(Apnay man ki pera (takleef) akhir kisay bataye)
Baavari piyaa ki – (6-times)
(Deewani Piya ki)

The time stays traveling so do we. No wonder if I die tomorrow and I don’t know if someone will remember me or not but it is not true for those who use to make their mark on history. One such person was Oscar Paterson. The world will remember him for his greatness that he showed in his Jazz compositions. It is reported that he composed 200 albums and won 8 Grammy awards, including a life time achievement honor in 1997.

Oscar Peterson, the great Jazz pianist died at the age of 82 in his home in Toronto of Kidney failure. “He was a national treasure” said Canada’s Governor General, Michaelle Jean. He was famous for his fast-playing virtuoso style. He has the honor of being one of Jazz’s most recorded musicians.

The British saxophonist Sir John Dankworth, who also worked with Peterson, said: “Oscar was a wonderful example of jazz at its best. He was a wonderful player, prodigious technique, fantastic ideas and a very humble man.” Oscar started his career very early; he released his first single at the age of 19 and performed with greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and Nat “King” Cole.

Today I went to regional office of FPSC at Karachi to get the form for CSS 2007; they gave me voucher to deposit the fee at National Bank so I rushed to bank immediately as it was already late for Banking hours. As expected the banking timings were over and I was late by 5 minute, just missed…. Having faced all this I thought, why we Pakistani are punctual regarding closing hours only, why not we behave same way while coming to our office. Most of the times, in Public sector, late of 15 minutes is considered a norm. Latter I moved to some other place had a long trip of Karachi aimlessly. Sometimes wondering aimlessly leaves frustration and I experienced the same today. On my way back had club sandwich (my lunch ? gush life of a bachelor….) and rented two Indian Movies, ‘Babul’ and ‘Guru’. Babul is a typical Indian melodrama but Music is superb especially the track ‘Banwari Piya ki’ in voice of Sonu Nigham with classical touch is worth listening, since I love Indian Ragas, classical and semi-classical music a lot so this track was a treat. I am habitual watching of two to three movies in a row so after Babul I started Guru. Guru is a very nice movie about a young man Guru (Abhishek Bachan) who with his confidence was able to make fortune but gets hit by the red tapism. After getting bankrupted, he never loses hope since he believes that fortune favors the bold. In this movie one can’t stay without getting inspired. The acting of Abhshek was really very good, the way he had started proving his metal with ‘Yuva’, with role of ‘Lalan’, continue in this movie too.
To janab ya tha mera Saturday, no studies no tension sort of, ab free hon soch ra hon koi aur movie dekhon…so bye till next post…

Awww found the link; you can download the song ‘Banwari Piya ki’!
