Selection of optional subjects is a bit tricky job that’s why lots of aspirants get confused but I would like you to get relaxed and make this important decision with few things in your mind.

First thing that you must consider is your aptitude for the subject in question. You might find one subject scoring but if you do not have aptitude for that subject, you will never be able to earn good marks. The next thing that you should consider is your interest. In my view interest is the primary thing that can help you sail smoothly while preparing and appearing in actual examination. Once you have these things in your mind, you are ready to go for selection of subjects. Now, you need to get hold of the complete list of optional subjects, next, jot down those subjects that you find interesting and you have aptitude for and lastly, have a look at the past papers of the subjects of you noted down, if you find it easy to deal the questions in past papers, choose that subject and start preparing.

There are several titles available in the market for preparation of compulsory subjects. I my personal opinion, you must not get confused with selection of books for compulsory subjects, sit back relax and plan a day of shopping for books. It may take sometime to choose the ideal book for yourself but once you have selected the proper book for yourself, it is rewarding. I mean only you can select the best book for yourself. Let me give you an example, for most of the CSS aspirants, Exploring the world of English stays a book of prime importance but for me it is not true since this book is/was not meeting my needs so I preferred the other option that is High School Grammar by Wren and Martin for Grammar and for idioms and other related things I happened to get hold of some other books available in the market as well as newspapers. This is how I see it. So, you need to spend sometime in market, go and have a look at all the titles available, have a look at the contents, have some feel by reading a topic or two from the book. Done with it, then decide on spot. This is the sincerest advice I can give you else for your satisfaction I would have listed some titles and you would have followed them blindly ending in damage and in extreme cases loss in face of failure. So go ahead, listen to your needs only then you will be able to decide what is good for you?

Apart from this, here you are with my selection:

English Essay: Daily Dawn

English Precis & composition: High School Grammar by Wren and Martin, Newspapers, websites like answers.com, dictionary.com etc.

Current Affairs: Daily Dawn, bbcnews.com, cnn.com etc.

Everyday Science: Matriculation level’s Biology, Physics and Chemistry books and Encarta Encyclopedia software.

Pakistan Affairs: Selected topics from Sohail Bhatti’s Pakistan Affairs, Lecture CDs of Pakistan Affairs by Virtual University.

Islamiyat: Islamiyat by Imtiaz Shahid, Surah meaning from Moulana Maudodi, Lecture CDs of Islamiyat by Virtual University.

There are 6 compulsory papers in CSS examination and every candidate is obliged to appear in these papers. Each subject carries 100 marks. The passing marks for compulsory subjects are 40% marks. The compulsory subjects are:

English Essay

English Precis and Composition

General Knowledge Paper-I (Everyday Science)

General Knowledge Paper-II (Current Affairs)

General Knowledge Paper-III (Pakistan Affairs)

Islamiyat

It is imperative to note that all the compulsory papers must be attempted in English except Islamiyat that can be attempted in Urdu as well. In General knowledge papers, the pass marks are calculated as an aggregate. It means that if a person earns fewer marks in one paper, he can compensate it by performing well in other paper. The candidates should expect some objective type questions (MCQ’s) in compulsory. For recommended books regarding compulsory subjects, please have a look at the CSS FAQs at Silence.

In my point of view if you are a college or university student and want to prepare for CSS, I would like to let you know that it is not the right time to start an all out attack. At this moment, your first priority should be your course or degree work since it the single most important thing to work for at this stage and you do have a lot of time for preparation of CSS latter.

In case, you still want to do something that can benefit you when you are ready for the preparation of CSS, I am mentioning few activities that are worth trying:

Start reading newspaper, preferably Dawn, punctually.

Make a habit of writing at least one page in English every day, maintaining a personal diary is a good idea.

Read some good books in English.

Watch current affairs program on TV

Listen to world news on BBC, CNN and so on

Learn the map in a way that when you are asked to point out a country with some issue of current importance, you must be having some information about its geography.

Lastly, once again, I want to emphasis that good written skills in English is the key to success. I wish you all the best.

There is no set time requirement for preparation of CSS. It depends upon one’s capabilities, stamina and how hard and smart he is working. I prepared in 5 and a half months. I shared my experience with a candidate and coached him 24/7 and he happened to prepare and pass in one month so it shows that it varies from person to person. I have seen people preparing for years and fail so it is you who can decide for yourself when it comes to time requirement for preparation of CSS.

Attempting a paper is a tricky job; I will take up issues one by one:

Language

In order at attempt the paper of any subject of CSS, you must know that there is no need of use a language that is very complex to understand. Simple language that makes sense and that can convey you thoughts is good enough for you to pass the papers with flying colors.

Planning the answers

In my opinion, it is a good idea to plan the question before hand. It gives us an edge over other. You can spend in this planning for sometime and then start attempting the question. The planning of answer is same as you are planning your essays; the only difference is that the answers to questions will be shorter as compared to Essay.

Can we use markers?

Yes markers are allowed for putting heading. Apart from it, there is no restriction to not to use ball pen but in my view, fountain pen sheds a positive impact. You can always use markers and pointer pens for heading and sub-heading.

What is the role of time management?

The proper time management is the key to success that’s why I put emphasis on planning ahead. You must atleast give 15 minutes to each question when your paper asks you to attempt 5 question in 3 hours.

What should be the length of answers?

Staying to the point is very good, unnecessary length will cause harm instead of benefit. In my view, it is good to write one page for 5 marks so if the question is of 20 marks, one can write fours pages and that is enough. This is how I see it.
