hi i want to be prepare for css exam of 2009 and i have no information of css that when css exams is held,what subjects should be very profitable and what subjects should i choose and also tell me how can i get regestration on your site?

Dear Abdul Majid,

The exams in most of the cases are held every year and dates are announced by Federal Public Service Commission Islamabad (FPSC). For CSS 2009, it is announced by FPSC that exams will be held in March 2009. About Subjects selection, I would advice you to go through the complete list of all the subjects and jot down the subjects of your interest. Latter, get hold of the past papers of subjects you find interesting and keeping in view the question in those past papers, you can easily make the decision. To me, all subjects are scoring; all you need is your personal interest. This was true for me when I am looking back at my experience. About registration with my blog, you can find the required link on main page in side bar on right.

In my point of view, if you want to prepare by yourself, you can do so easily by buying the relevant book. Apart from this, Internet is a very good source of material that is of current importance related to your subjects and off course current affairs. So you can use this media to gain access to wealth of information available with sites like Wikipedia, BBC, CNN and so on. About notes, actually I don’t believe in using notes of others. If you have time and ability, you can prepare your own notes keeping in view your requirements and abilities and it will provide you with a great help when you are appearing in examination.

Dear Javed,

The books you have specified are good enough for preparation. In case of Pakistan Affairs, I personally think that Rabbani is not sufficient so you should better find some other title and I am sure you will get one easily from market. Personally, I followed the book by Sohail Bhatti named Pakistan Affairs and use to recommend the same but you must know that you do not need to read it completely, all you need to do is prepare for the topics of relevance and customize them for your use during limited time available in actual exam.

If you can manage time appropriately, you can do CSS by being in you current Job. This was true for me since when I was preparing myself, I was full time employed and use to prepare side by side with my job. It is all about time management and if you know who to do it, go ahead and Inshahallah you will stay successful.

Could you please give us a rough idea , how many students clear CSS every year and how many vacancies are there. i want to appear in 2009 CSS Examination.
i have a confusion with english compostion , for enlish idioms, i remember everyday 5 idioms and 5 phrasal verbs which will make in total 1200 idioms and 1200 phrasal verbs till the end feb,2009 InshahAllah.And in my opinion its very easy and appropriate way.my question is this , am doing right? beacause when i discused this strategy to one CSS Officer he replied you must remeber atleast 50 to 100 idioms everyday and finish this job within a month

My personal opinion about Idioms and related material is a bit different. English is a very rich language and one can not cram all about it in limited available when preparing for CSS. So, I would suggest that if you are planning to remember most significant idioms from Examination point of you, you should customize this thing as per you needs and abilities. To me your strategy is no less that what you are told by some fellow who is a qualifier. So go ahead with you own way only then you will be able to do it properly else I wonder if you could ever follow the strategy told to you by your qualifier friend. This is how I feel about it and I may be wrong.

True you are when you are telling me that there are so many books available in Market for compulsory subjects, what I will suggest you that do not get confused, sit back relax and plan a day for shopping of books. It may take sometime to choose the ideal book for yourself but once you have selected the proper book for yourself, it is rewarding. I mean only you can select the best book for yourself. Let me give you an example, for most of the CSS aspirants, Exploring the world of English stays a book of prime importance but for me it is not true since this book is/was not meeting my needs so I preferred other option that is High School Grammar by Wren and Martin with idioms and other related things from some other books available in the market. This is how I see it. So, you need to spend sometime in market, go and have a look at all the titles available in market, have a look at the contents, have some feel by reading a topic or two from the book then and there and decide. This is the sincerest advice I can give you else for your satisfaction I would have listed some titles and you would have followed them blindly ending in damage and in extreme cases loss in face of failure. So go ahead, listen to your needs only then you will be able to decide what is good for you? In my point of you, the salaries are simply enough to meet the family needs, you will not get loads of money that you can earn through other profession so if you are a public service oriented person it is the best option else find your heaven somewhere else. It is a good idea to plan ahead but I think in your case you need to concentrate on your Pre-Medical studies first. It is the crucial time for you when you can make or break your career. See, CSS is an examination not a degree and you only get three chances to pass it and once you could not make it to the Public Services of Pakistan, your degree can save you a good deal. So it is my sincere and brotherly advice to you to embark upon a course that is career savvy. Apart from this, you can take along your CSS preparation too. Thank you so very much for your kind words. In my point of view, studying towards masters in Economics and preparing for CSS side by side is the best strategy. While you are studying for your master degree, you can keep an eye over the current affairs, apart from this; you can practice writing and improve your skills with answering the question in written section of the CSS examination. This is what I think rest you have to decide. Mind it, CSS is not a degree so it is not a good idea to give priority to CSS over degree courses and examinations. Good luck!

Yes a graduate aged 28 or less can appear in the examination so in my point of view if you are of the age you can apply for CSS. About Subject selection, I would say, you need to look at your interest first, you can get hold of the list of subject, jot down those subject that you find interesting and you do have some previous knowledge, have a look at the past papers of the subjects of your interest, if you find it easy to deal the questions in past papers, choose the subject and start preparing. In my point of view choosing the subjects of your choice is the best thing that you can do with yourself. About the books of compulsory subjects, please refer to my reply in this column to similar question by Sobia, it will help you a good deal. Apart from this, I would tell you my selection of the books, in Public Admin, I followed Sultan Khan’s Public Administration and Personnel Administration; in India and Pakistan History, I followed K. Ally; in Journalism, I followed Mass Communication by Imtiaz Shahid and Sociology was not my subject but I have seen some qualifiers following Sociology by A. Hameed Taga. The CSS 2009 is scheduled in March 2009 and about when to attempt is your personal choice based on your age and preparation. The maximum age limit for CSS is 28 years so keep this thing in your mind. good work guys.a truly amazing job.i’m also planning for taking css exams in 2009.its basically my dad’s dream…and i really want to give it my best shot.i’ve done BCS n currently working in public sector.the subjects i chose due to my interest and a lot of pondering through past papers and subject material are:

i got myself lots of books as well..what ever i could get my hands on,as i love reading.but while going through your blog i got to a conclusion that i should follow one book…right?

and although i am not a regular on current affairs but i read paper daily…but not as you advised “DAWN”…i prefer “The News”…somhow i loose my interest while reading dawn.should i try developing my interest in DAWN?

I am glad to know that you are one of those aspirants who are to the point and going in perfect direction. I hope if you continue following the same logic attitude towards your preparation, you will make it to your destination. Now about one book Policy for preparation, I strongly believe in it and I would recommend it to all the others too. I have noticed that you do have the similar subjects as I had when I prepared and appeared (except Sociology). The choice of books is all about personal needs so I would say that you can follow the book that you prefer about me, let me tell you my choice of books, in Public Admin, I followed Sultan Khan’s Public Administration and Personnel Administration; in India and Pakistan History, I followed K. Ally; in Journalism, I followed Mass Communication by Imtiaz Shahid; in IR, I followed Prakash Chandra and since Sociology was not my subject but I have seen some qualifiers following Sociology by A. About newspaper, it is ok if you are reading The News, there is no hard and fast rule that you should read Dawn but I would point it out that The Friday Feature of Dawn is must read sort of thing for Islamiyat paper and you must read selected feature from Dawn since I found them very helpful for me. The write ups by Shahid J Burki are a complete resource for Essay paper when Essay is related to economics. Apart from this, Ardeshir Cowasjee has a very lucid style of writing so it can shed a very positive effect on your written skills and so on so forth. About Academy and tutor in Islamabad, I know about national officers Academy, I do not know about rest.

The maximum age for CSS is 28 years. About comparison of ACCA with CSS, it is a matter of personal choice. I know that ACCA qualified individuals are very well paid and as for as CSS qualified individuals are concerned, they have meager salaries but they have a good deal of power at their disposal. Moreover, ACCA takes a good deal of time to get qualified but CSS takes no more than 6 months if prepared well. These are few points that can give you a proper idea. Go ahead, think 101 times about your priorities and decide only than you can reach to a logical outcome based on your needs and cabilities.

I am glad that you want to join civil services of Pakistan. As for as subject selection is concerned it is a matter of personal interest and one can guide you in limited capacity. In try to encourage the candidates to decide about subjects at their own since this the best that can be done. For preparation of Current Affairs, the best option is ready Daily Dawn punctually and practice writing about the issues of current importance. My experience suggests that in current affair paper, the examiners are interest to observe your skills to analyze the issue of current significance and one can master this skill by reading the news, editorials and features being published. Apart from this, you must get hold of wall size World map and Pakistan’s map and try to relate the news with map it will help you understand the very important aspect of current affairs that deals with geo-political importance of different issues. The forms are not yet available. I think they will be available in Jan 2009 and it will be advertised by FPSC in all the major dailies of Pakistan. The same will be available on FPSC website. Apart from this, the exams as per advertisement of FPSC are scheduled to take place in March 2009 (until advertised otherwise).

Recently, I have come to know about an institute at Karachi named national officer academy. I don’t know about its success and impact but I have heard the some CSPs are teaching there. Apart from this, one of the worthy user of this blog reported that they are still trying to organize things. This is all I know about institute in Karachi for that. I think you must visit this academy, they are offering classes for free for initial three days, once there, try to observe things and decide about joining it or not.

It is indeed a very pleasant thing to know that you want to prepare for CSS besides having so many responsibilities as a house wife. You can be a role model for many when it comes to success. My sincerest prayers and wishes are with you. Now coming to your query, to me all the subjects are scoring provided studied with heart and soul. Take my example, I happened to score very good marks in Indo-Pak (i.e. 128) because I had interest and I prepared well so don’t worry, if you have interest in these subjects and you are determined, you can do ahead and Inshahallah you will make it. About online resource/course for preparation, I haven’t yet found any such place so I can not offer any assistance in this regards.

First of all I want to clear one thing; group allocation is not related to subject selection for written examination. So, please do not relate these two things. Subject selection and allocation of group are two different domains. Initially you need to pass the written examination and that’s all. Hello Sir…I want to ask from u…dat does it really matter to have a very strong and good background..i mean da secondary and higher secondary grades….cuz i’ve done my O/A level wid somewhat average grades…but now m doing my bachelors in Business Management and completed my 3 years…and m fond of takin a competition exam….CSS dat is….Im goin good with bachelors having my CGPA above 3.2 from da total of 4….so i want to ask dat, will dat previous academic record really counts alot or is it OK?

Previous record has very little role when it comes to CSS so don’t worry. In your case, I think you have a very good academic record from CSS point of view. Cheer up and go ahead with your preparation for CSS. Good luck!

just now after sending my quiries i went through all these msgs n hv sm more questions in my mind:
-as im living abroad, if i come for prepration of css to pak how much time will b enough?
-im planning to live in KSA in future is it good for me to do css or may be i’ll come back to pak? As i’ve read one of ur replies that jobs depends on seats…

Dear Bushra,

The time required for preparation varies from individual to individual, I happened to prepare in 5 and half months, some of my fellows prepare in lesser time and so on so it is really a matter of personal capacity to prepare. About coming back to Pakistan or not, well again it is personal choice, you know your dos and do nots better so you can decide what is better for you. About seats, well yes, no. of jobs are directly related to availability of seats.

with this hope that u will be fine.im here again to ask some points as u helped me during the preparation of my CSS exams.i have given exams this year,and now waiting for the result.would u plz tell me that normally when the result is put up.secondly, i want to change my group, i mean as we number the group on the form according to our priority.is there any way to change it,or does it all depend on our interview?because now i want to join that group to which i had given forth number.so plz tell me about it.

It felt good to hear from you once again after a long time. About announcement of result, we no body can say it for sure to when it is going to get announced so all I know are rumors and I don’t want to spread them any further. About changing your priority for group, don’t worry you will get a chance to change the group priorities if you pass and before interview but then it will be one last chance to change no changes latter so stay careful when making any decision to change. Yes, CSS examination is meant for graduates so obviously, one can achieve this goal after doing his B.A. but for that the minimum age limit is 21 and Maximum age limit is 28. About suggestions, you can click here for my recipe of Success.

i hve completed my inter exam, i am hopeful to get above 960 marks,my brother has suggested to do B A 4m G C LAHORE n den I R 4m Quaid e azam university n den appear in CSS exam,but i want to complete my MBBS n den want to appear in CSS exam,no doubt my aim is to become CSP officer,wat do u think is a better option 4 me?

Dear Mehtab Ahmad,

Well to me both things are equally good but you must know that CSS is not a degree examination and you can avail only three chance pass it so you must have a back up plan in case you could not make it to CSP. Now it is up to you if you have a backup plan of becoming a Doctor or something else with you I.R. degree.
