Q-1 This exam like CSS held every year?
Q-2 no authentic guides available? only dogar guides available in market?
Q-3 From where i can find past papers?
Q-4 How select optionals (leave interest) This question is for both CSS and SPS
I have some confusion that some subjects like maths and statistics consider to be marks gaining subjects and subjects like history or physiology are not at that level we can score marks.thanks

Thank you for writing to us, lets get to your queries, yes CSS is held every year but provincial commission exams are subject to availability of seats so it is held whenever the seats are to be filled. You are right that when it comes to provincial commission, very little guidance is available but still you can benefit from the outlines available for CSS. I have been observing that in provincial commission exams the subjects are nearly same that in CSS with a bit narrower approach. About the past papers, you can get the papers from the designated regional and head office of the commission. I don’t know if question papers are available in market too. In my point of view for selection of the optional subjects, you need to examine your personal interest and aptitude. Have a look at the list of subjects, jot down the subjects of your interest and once you are done with it, get hold of the past papers and select the subject you feel at ease with. This is how I selected my optional subjects.
Now coming to marks giving subject, I believe that all subjects can give superb marks provided one prepares them well. So, if you have a grip over the subject you can earn great marks be it a subject like maths or history.

No, B.A is not a mandatory degree for CSS; one can appear with B. Sc. in engineering too. About the second part of question, in my view both the occupational groups have their charm and its again the matter of personal choice.

When it comes of written section of the examination is concerned, the academic record has zero effect but it can leave a good impression when it comes to interview portion of the examination. In case of Indo-Pakistan History, you can go ahead with reading the two volume book by K. Ally for Indo-Pak-I paper. I prepared from it and earned good marks. For Indo-Pak History-II a book named Pakistan Affairs by Sohail Bhatti can help along with news paper because in many cases the questions are formed out of current affairs of

I am Petroleum Engineer, currently i am working at
I m Planing to move for CSS Examinations that are going to be held next year.
I think Geology,Maths and Indo-Pak History are subjetcs which i will select as optional.
but here is only one confusion that is it possible that i will be able to prepare for CSS as i am doing a full time job. I can afford 2 to 3 hours per day for CSS Preparation.
most of my seniors are saying that CSS preparation requires 10 to 12 hours a day

When I was preparing for my CSS examination, I too was doing a full time job so my experience dictates that one can prepare for it with a full time job but firm determination is required and I hope you are determined enough to move ahead. Now about time required, if you are preparing for the exam a complete year, 3 hours daily with punctuality can make it happen but for that you need to plan ahead because sound planning and proper time management is the backbone for the success. So, don’t worry, plan and manage your time properly, I know you will achieve your goal but remember, it is very important to stay punctual and determined. I wish you all the best.!

Brother, you need to sit and plan first before embarking upon any course. I am glad to meet such high achiever and I am glad to know that you want to put your efforts for the CSS examination. In you case, I would suggest you to abstain from devoting 6 hours to CSS preparation. Being a doctor myself, I know what it is like being in 4th and final year of medical. It is better for you to devote as much time to your professional studies as you can. If you have sometime, you can improve your English written skills and current affairs. In my view going for optional subjects and compulsory subject at the moment is a bit earlier. All you need to do is read the newspaper so that you can have the required grip on current affairs and write as much as you can, it will offer you the required expression power. I know once you do it for the remaining year of your stay in medical school; you will have enough skill to prepare for CSS in no more than 3 months after graduation. It is my sincere advice else I can help you with any other query, feel free to write to me.

About improving your English written skill, you can read the newspaper daily and start writing about anything. Start writing about your day to day activities, it will have you in developing the expression power. Since you have a lot of time to reach the cut off age, you can plan English coaching, it will give you the much required initial boost. I wish all the good for your future endeavors.

I am quite happy to see your helpful attitude towards people. I really appriciate your effort. I have a question regarding volume of content. As of opptional subjects, i have intention to pick chemistry, pure mathematics and economics for year 2009. Chemistry and p.mathematics arent theoritical subjects, so they arent an issue. But for eco, my confussion is that, has answer to be precise and point to point or it require long and detailed explainations(relevent material)? i know eco isnt your subject but still if you have any idea, please let me know. thanks.

Thanks for you kind words. When it comes to content for CSS papers, I had a general rule. For a question of 20 marks I used to write no more than 4 pages. It was all about staying to the point and clear in thoughts. I earned success with this approach and I think it might help others too. Sir i have sorted names of suggested readings which you have given in your coulmns for some of the subjects n i find them good enough to prepare. but we at here need the guidence for more subjects to complete our 1200 at least for the ones you have studied along with names of suggested books so it is a humble request if you can write them once collectively for us.

Acha I am about to complete my graduation in a few days time . After graduation i am intersted in doing MSC Criminology either from here or by going abroad . The question i wanted to ask u guys was that can i join police services after doing MSc criminology or i will have to pass CSS after doing MSC ? Because once i heard from some body that after doing MSC criminology or PHD criminology there is a direct induction of boys in police or FIA ? sir i selected economics as it is my own subject indo pak history and political. Is it a good combination if not then wat i have to select which will fit with economics plz so tired SIR wat to do i dont know.
How many times can one appear for the CSS exam ?? approx what if required? Plus is home study better for prep or the academy is must for that . I dont have any guidance about books. There are 10-15 books mentioned in the css website! I hardly will be able to know wch one of them is the best. My subjects are going to be eng lit/indo-pak history/journalism/business adm…. as opt , i wanna ask if Eng Lit is a scoring subject ?? or not bcz in B.A our lit marking was really very tough.. but i like lit and can study it better. Plus what book should i consult for P.affairs and current affairs???? Plz someone tell me, I dont have anyone in my family doin CSS so i dont know anything about this stuff.

i have heared, in CSS paper only red and black inc pen is allowed and in the other case the examiner may deduct 5 marks in each subject.
