I have recently developed a strong liking for joining the civil services,my friends who are also interested are the primary “driving force” here!I’m double-minded about PSP and FSP,besides having second thoughts about pursuing an engineering career, getting in some multi-national and making my mark there. But I have strong self-confidence that I can clear CSS exam soon after graduation.
<Please tell me your own experience and views about the charm that is CSS!is it really worth the effort….,.,,,,,the prestige and honour of a CSS officer aside…is it as attractive as it seems!finally…can u throw light on the facilities that are granted to a PSP/FSP officer in 17 cadre.,..
Anticipating a prompt reply.
An Aspirant

Dear Aspirant,

I am glad to know that you have developed liking for civil services. In my point of view our country needs intelligent fellows who can come forward and improve the working of system. Now let’s get to your queries, in my point of view at this stage when you are planning to go for this examination out of inspiration that you gained from your friends it is better to dedicate all your time to your degree. See, I have a professional degree too and I never give slightest of my time to preparation of CSS during my medical school besides I use to read news papers and periodicals and it helped me a lot. Similarly, keep on reading newspapers and periodicals you mentioned and stick to your degree. Once you are done with your Engineering degree, give a thought to CSS and if the response from your inner self comes in positive assertion, you are set to go. In you case, I think you have a good back ground of basic education and once you will decide about CSS, it will take no more than few months or 6 months at max. This is my honest opinion. About perks and privileges coming with Civil Services, the private jobs in multi-nationals are paid much more than officers in civil services of Pakistan but the prestige attached with civil services is something you will never find in private jobs. At the moment, I am working for WHO international and paid many a times more than any officer of my level in civil service but I feel leaning towards civil services because of respect and the spirit to serve the nation, that what I think and your ideal may vary from mine so try to find these answers from your own being. I hope my reply will help you a little. Do let me know if you need any further assistance. It is always a pleasure to help friend like you. I wish all the best.

Dear Sir,
It is always an honour to come across people like you who love to help others without expecting anything in return. I wanted to ask you that what is the best way to read any newspaper like Dawn? What parts must one concentrate more on than others? I don’t think they ask questions about sports in CSS exams.
What is a standard word count for the CSS essay?

Adeel

Dear Adeel,

Thank you very much for your kind words and I glad that you have a faith on my services. It is my pleasure to help my fellow country man. Now about tricks to read newspaper, in my case, I used to follow Dawn and in that paper, first and last pages should stay on high priority. After for international issues, one ought to read international page and if he has time, he should go for world in focus. Last but not least, you must develop the habit of at least reading a column on features page. Apart from this, from point of view of Islamiyat paper in CSS, one ought to read the special feature on Friday. This is it and I hope you will get most out of your readings. About sports questions, it is good to keep one self on sports event, they might ask few questions in MCQs but it is not necessary. About word count of Essay, 4000-5000 words are enough.

AOA, sir i am completing my graduation i-e (BBIT honors) in july 2008 . sir i want to appear in css examination of 2009 . which scoring optional subjects should i take? and sir can u tell me which academy is good for the preperation of css exams in lahore?

Naveeda

Dear Naveeda,

I am happy to know that you are planning to appear in CSS 2009. First of all, accept my best wishes for your future endeavors now about optional subject, I use to repeat time and again that it is all about interest of an individual and his aptitude. I would suggest you to grab the complete list of subjects, write down all the subjects you feel interested in, get hold of past papers and decide. With my experience, I can say that all subjects are scoring provided you prepare well. So, don’t worry, follow your intellect and decide about subject. In case you need any advice regarding what and how to study those subjects, I am always there to help you out. Now academies in Lahore, I prepared at Officers Academy of Hammad Sahab and I found it very helpful. Once you decide to go for that, you can give my reference and I am sure he will take good care of your preparation, do let me know if you need any assistance.

I am as well preparing myself for CSS. I as usual need some hints given by an Experienced fellow. So hence need you to advise me throughout if not then all in all. anyways, congratulations.

Nemat Chandio

Kayoom

Dear Kayoom,

Don’t consider it an obstacle, in my point of view it is the first step towards passing this tough exam and once you are through it properly, you will find a lot of ease. My view about selecting the optional subjects can be seen above in my advice to Naveeda. Kindly follow it and you will feel much better. I wish you all success and if you need any further assistance, feel free to write to me.

Aoa,

Can a foreign Pakistani take CSS exam. Please advise.
Reagrds
Sha

Dear Sha,

Firstly, I would like to wish you all the best. I am glad that you are already y through the process of choosing subject and I hope by now you are ready to embark upon the winning course and in this journey, you can count on me since its is always a pleasure to help aspirants. About your query regarding academy, in my point of view, it helps a lot but it does not mean that those who never go to an academy get failed, there are examples of fellows who passed this examination by preparing at their own so if you can afford time and money, go ahead for the academy but in case you can’t it is not a big issue. Now about second part of your query regarding Foreign Pakistani, brother, according to CSS rules 2008, any one who is a graduate and has Pakistani nationality can sit for this examination. If you need any further assistance, you are welcome.

iam a business greduate.and i want to appear in the css exame. but mu english is very weak. i have stared to write english essay daily but my expressions, garmmer and spelling are vary weak.so dear sir what you would suggest for me to over come on thes difficulties. please consider my request

Mohammad Ishaq

Dear Mohammad Ishaq,

English indeed is an issue that needs special attention when it comes to CSS Pakistan examination so your worries are justified but this issue can get resolved with practice. In my view, when you are telling me that you try to practice writing, you are on the right track, stick to it and you will see a revolutionary change in sometime. Apart from it, if you want to learn basic, try to find some English teacher who can help you out by advising you time to time with your write ups by making corrections etc.

Please write me with details.

Aamer

Dear Aamer,

Let me tell you general policy for this examination. A Pakistani national with a Bachelors degree can appear in this exam. The maximum age for this examination is 28 and one can avail three attempts only. Keeping in view this principal, you can appear second as well as third time but age limit apply and if your cross this age limit you can’t sit in the examination. The age relaxation applies for scheduled casts and candidates in government service already, in that case, the maximum age limit for CSS examination is 30 years. Now about preparation in Germany, yes you can prepare there too provided you do have books for the subjects.

In Karachi, I don’t have any idea about academies, for library, you can go to Liaquat National library or Defense Central library in Karachi else you can prepare at home too. About advisor, if you feel like, you can count on me.

hello Dr Farrukh
would u kindly guide me whether i m eligible for the CSS examination 2008 0r 2009 regarding age criteria??/ My DOB is 14th August 1980. I understand that it is late now but i m desperately want to take a chance. In case im not eligible would u suggest me any other competitive examination. i have done BCom.
One thing more i want to ask is if the forms are submitted in 2008, will exam take place in the same year i.e 2008 or in the following year i.e 2009. i would be grateful to u if u kindly reply at ur earliest.
thanx for ur consideration
Adiba Memon

Dear Adiba Memon,

In case of CSS 2008, its too late since the examination is under way and in case of CSS 2009, your will exceed the maximum age limit of 28 year so I makes you ineligible for CSS.

hi sir i realy enjoye your querries.sir i want to know what type subjects give maximum marks and kindly give me the name of political science books author.one thing i wana ask u in which sector u r working.bye ALLAH BLESS U

Naveed

Dear Naveed,

Any subject of your choice and interest can offer maximum marks provided you prepare well with dedication. About books regarding political Science, For Paper 1 section A you can find Judd Harmon’s “Political thought from Plato to present” to the point and for section B, you can follow A. C. Kapoor’s Principles of Political Science. For Muslim Politicalt thought section of Paper 1, Mohammad Aslam Chaudhry’s Muslim Political Thought is at par. When it comes to Paper-2 (i.e. CL) Mazhar-ul-Haq’s Modern constitutions is very comprehensive. Apart from it Aslam Chaudhary has a book on constitutions too so if you feel like you can follow it too but Mazhar’s book is most popular choice. About my sector of work at the moment, I am a researcher but will join Civil Service by end of 2008 most probably.

sir i am a student of b.com and i want to do css.plz give some advisible comments

Dear Sara,

About academies in Lahore, I would say I prepared from Officers Academy Lahore. Sajida

Dear Sajida,

The past papers of CSS 2007 can be downloaded by clicking here.

SIR PLEASE TELL ME A BOOK FOR GENERAL KNOWLEGE,CURRENT AFFAIRS,EVERY DAY SCIENCE.

IMRAN JAHANGIR

Dear Imran,

In case General Knowledge, you do have to appear in three subject and I am suggesting books for each subject below:

Hello, I am currently in the final year of my Bachelors Degree in an European university. I plan to further my studies in MSc from a foreign university, which would take me another year. By the end of the latter degree, hopefully by May 2009, I intend to return to Pakistan and prepare myself for the CSS examinations. A year from now, I will be 24 years old which I believe is a ripe age to undergo the exam. I am interested in the following optional subjects offered:

These subjects complete the required 600 Marks necessary for the optional subjects. I would like to enquire about the best books that you can recommend to me to prepare for the mentioned subjects.
Hoping for a prompt and positive response.
Thank You,
Umayr Tariq

Dear Umayr Tariq,

First of all, I want to make a correct, since I.R. carried 100 marks so these three subjects will complete 500 marks so for that matter you need to opt some other subject of 100 marks or replace I.R. with a paper of 200 marks. Now suggested reading, For Paper 1 section A of Political Science, you can find Judd Harmon’s “Political thought from Plato to present” to the point and for section B, you can follow A. C. Kapoor’s Principles of Political Science. For Muslim Political thought section of Paper 1, Mohammad Aslam Chaudhry’s Muslim Political Thought is at par. For International relations book by Prakash Chandra is the best and in case of psychology, I don’t have much idea but will try to help you by asking some fellow of mine who had Psychology as his optional subject.

    Respectd Mr. Farrukh
I am quite happy to see your helpful attitude towards people. I really appriciate your effort. I have a question regarding volume of content. As of opptional subjects, i have intention to pick chemistry, pure mathematics and economics for year 2009. Chemistry and p.mathematics arent theoritical subjects, so they arent an issue. But for eco, my confussion is that, has answer to be precise and point to point or it require long and detailed explainations(relevent material)? i know eco isnt your subject but still if you have any idea, please let me know. thanks.
