Fatima Bhutto and Women Hospital Larkana

Today, a fellow doctor of mine emailed me an article of Fatima Bhutto dated Oct 28, 2007 that got published in The News. This article is about Lady Doctors working in rural Sindh and it is titled as The Lady Doctors of Larkana. In this article, Ms. Bhutto has praised the dedication with which these lady doctors are tirelessly working for the betterment of masses. Fatima has given us the details of Shaikh Zayed Women Hospital in Larkana and I am glad that she has the aching heart for her people. The same people her grandfather, father and aunt served and died for. I think we need educated people like Fatima and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who can come forward and prove themselves as the well wishers of the nations. Now let’s get back to the article I am talking about.

In this article, statistics and observations are very much true since I myself have the experience of working in the same city and hospital for sometime but I found something very pinching and I would like to point it out here. In this article, Ms. Bhutto tells us about the incidence of her getting fainted in mid of a caesarian section due to halothane. While narrating it, she writes,

“The lady doctors of Larkana are true heroes. They work for meager salaries, between Rs. 6,000 to 17,000 — a pittance for their superior skills. They work day and night, weekends, and holidays and though exhausted, their bedside manner is impeccable (they were very gracious when I fainted in the middle of a cesarean section, from the halothane mind you. Not because I was frightened or anything, no sir).”

The above mentioned lines make me think to why she was there in Operation Theater? What she was doing? How can doctors allow her to be there? Were proper measure taken? Was she allowed because any of her near relative was getting operated? Or It was the feudal mindset that makes her someone who can trespass protocols since she is daughter of Late Murtaza Bhutto and grand daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto? Do other journalists get the similar opportunities? Was the patient asked for permission to get her in as an observer? Summing it up all, is it ethical?

In govt. hospitals specially, overall in Pakistan, you will see irrelevant people roaming in and out of wards. She can be one example too. We, as a nation, generally get impressed if a high-up of society visits … !!

But then it’s a speculation on our parts too :)

And I tend to disagree from I think we need educated people like Fatima and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who can come forward and prove themselves as the well wishers of the nations..

    Who is Bilawal Bhutto Zardari?
There’s only Bilawal Zardari, you people are like sheep - repeating whatever the media and the politicians feed you. Shame on Pakistan, God save Pakistan.
