This is a feature on my blog for those who are aspiring to appear in entry examination for Central Superior Services of Pakistan (CSS). This advice column will get published every Sunday as a weekly feature on Silence so your queries should reach to Silence by Friday evening every week.

Hello,

I’m in my last semester of Software Engineering and will be done in next 3 months Inshahallah. I want to start my CSS preparation for Exams in 2009 as soon as I get done with it. My area of interest is “Foreign Services of Pakistan”. I would like to know which subject should I choose and which one book from that particular course should be my priority?

Regards
Wafa Khan

Dear Wafa Khan,

I am glad that you are planning to appear in CSS 2009 and you are interested in Foreign Services of Pakistan. About choosing optional subjects, it is all about interest and background in those particular subjects. What I will suggest you is that you should have a look at the optional subjects list, jot down the subjects you have some interest in, look at the past papers of those subjects and then decide about it them. All you need to do is choosing subject in a way that you should have 600 marks out of them, apart from this you must be careful about the subjects grouped together. From every group you can take subjects making 200 marks maximum. Now about books, once you choose the subjects, write back to me and only then I will be in a position to advise you on this. Wishing you all the best with your plans!

Hi Sir,

My name is dr ghulam asghar. i m an aspirant for 2008. Main difficulties in my case is precis and composition. i feel entangled at synon, word pairs and idioms. Pleas tell me what do examiners mean when they say make a sentence from these words to elaborate its meaning. As far as i understand most words have more than one meaning for if we bring out its meaning in a sentence which doesnt satisfy examiners viewpoint, then we are surely in trouble and if we write down meaning of a word first and then make a sentence we are in trouble for doing what is not explicitly mentioned in a paper where its only mentioned to make a sentence to bring its meaning. so what does ur analysis say about this issue?

regards
dr. ghulam asghar

Dear Dr. Ghulam Asghar,

About précis and composition, I would say, more you will practice, more perfection you will gain out of it. So, in this particular case all you need to do is practice, practice and practice. Now coming to second part of your question, it’s simple, the examiners checking the papers of CSS are experts and you must know that they are the ones who have spent their life time in serving the subject in question so don’t worry about their point of view. They are trained to keep an eye over contemporary issue when it comes to their subject and their vision is broad enough to accept what is correct even if it does not match their personal view. All you need to do is write what is correct to best of your knowledge and if your version is acceptable, you will get full marks. Now coming to your query regarding how to attempt this particular question, in my case, I faced it by defining it in complete sentences and was about to score to an extent that I was declared pass. So, I would like to suggest you to follow as it is mentioned in the question paper, simply no need to read between the lines, follow the instructions in question paper.

I am adeela I am a student of b.sc(hons)second year, two years are left behind of my studies i want to start preperation of the 2010 css exams with my tough university shedule what i should do.

Regards
Adeela

Hi Adeela,

At the moment, I would suggest you to keep track of the current affairs by developing the habit of reading newspaper daily, apart from this; you must also take interest in practicing the written skills. When it comes to CSS, the most difficult and very first stage is to stay successful in written section of the examination. So, in order to stay successful in CSS Pakistan’s written examination, you really need very good written skills so ponder over it. I would advise you to write diary daily, start with writing about your day to day activities and with improvement in your skills you can go ahead with writing about contemporary issues. If you do have any other query, feel free to contact me. I wish you good luck!

AOA Dr. Farrukh,

Hope you are in good spirits. I wanted to aske something about the medical tests. A friend of mine who is an MBA plans to appear in CSS 09 but she has a problem with her eyesight. Her eyesight is weak upto -20 of both eyes i think. She wears contact lenses and has absolutely no problem of vision with lenses. In fact, even if we sit at the last bench in the class, she conveniently notes down everything from the white board.

The problem is that someone told her she wont be able to clear medical tests for CSS with that weak an eyesight and now she is reluctant whether to appear for the exam or not. Her eye is healthy otherwise, i.e., the retina and ‘aankh ka perdah’ (i dont know its medical name) is perfectly healthy. And has absolutely no eye diseases. No one can guess that she wears lenses until she tells. So tell me is she available or not? We had plans to study together for CSS but now this problem has come in between. Please confirm about this that has a weak eyesight upto – 20 has a problem or not? I shall be thankful.

Regards,

Sehar

Dear Sehar,

I have very good news for your friend. She is eligible to compete for the examination. FPSC has no problem with her eye sight issue. In extreme cases even when a person is dumb, deaf and blind, he can compete for the four selected occupational groups namely, commerce and trade, audit and accounts, postal, and information groups. Apart from this, if you want to know in detail about the eye sight requirements of her group of choice, feel free to write me, I will love to help her out with giving the group specific information.

I need to prepare myself for css…tell me best way

    Sir,
what advice will you give regarding use of different colour markers on the answer book to highlight different important points or headings.Through out my studies i have noticed that although it is written in the instructions on the answer book to use only blue ink but the condidates are excessively using multi colour markers. What’s the case in this examination?

    Hi Farrukh bhai,

Given the present trend of CSS papers, Essay and Composition papers have proved a hard nut to crack. It would be substantially helpful in the interest of CSS candidates who come to your blog to seek your guidance if you arrange material for both of the papers mentioned above. Regards.

    Hello there Sir,

Iam a graduate in Business Admin, now doing my MBA and after lots of thought regarding my career.. I have come upon the decision of preparing for the CSS examination.
I need to inquire regarding two things, First being, iam a shortsighted girl, with an eyesight of -5.00 for both the right and the left eye, and I am interested in the Foreign services field, am i not eligible for it because of my eyesight?

and secondly, I dont agree with having to cram history, why doesnt the board think of revising the syllabi and on the whole make it more intellectual based?

    Many Thanks.

Dear Teacher I think you intend to help the people by noosing them in a high school routine. I would suggest to be subjective rather than empirical.
