This is a new feature on my blog for those who are aspiring to appear in entry examination for Central Superior Services of Pakistan (CSS). This advice column will get published every Sunday as a weekly feature on Silence so your queries should reach to Silence by Friday evening every week.

Here, I would like to request one more thing that all those who are interested in submitting their queries should try to keep in mind the correct spelling and grammar. I have noticed that people writing around online are least concerned about language and to me it leaves a very bad impact on their overall written skills so it is in your benefit to consider my request. I will not waste any more of your time so let get to business:

Hi,

Hope so u r fine.
I av started preparation of css for 2009 on my own. Currently i m studing 2 subj pak affairs books 1. Carvan böok house by M. Ikram Rabbani.
2. Pak af by m. Sohail bhatti
And for journalism mirza m yousaf.
Are these enough for these 2 sub. If not then suggest me some. Also for e.science , and english.
I tried to study ir from parkash book but it was lil bit comlexed so i av postponed it.
If u av read sociology then tel a gud book to start.
Thanx for ur time.
MavRick

Dear MavRick,

I am fine. It is good to know that you have started preparing for CSS 2009 at your own and I hope you will make it.

My general advice to all the aspirants stays that when it comes to CSS, one need to adopt one book policy in all their subjects. Here I would like to make it clear that when I am saying one book policy, it means that one ought to follow no more than one book per subject. It decreases the confusion and provides you the time and space to concentrate on the subject. This is how I prepared for it and was able to pass the examination.

Now coming to books regarding Pakistan Affairs, in my view Pakistan Affairs by Sohail Bhatti is at par and it covers all the required topics to an extent. Here I would like bring one thing in your notice that this book is insufficient when it comes to issue of current importance. In Pakistan Affairs paper, many question come from the current affairs too so for that matter, you need to read the news paper daily so that you can face such questions based on the current issues related to Pakistan. About journalism, I followed book named Mass communication from Imtiaz Shahid and to me it was more than enough.

Now, let’s get to the other subjects you have mentioned. Regarding Every day Science, you must know that majority of the questions are related to Human physiology so you need to study it with special consideration. For this, you must get hold of text book of Biology being taught to the students of SSC and read it thoroughly; it will help you a lot. Apart from this, you need to form a strategy, get hold of the syllabus for CSS, note down the topics specified. After that install the Encarta on your computer system, search for the topics you found in the syllabus, copy the related stuff from Encarta and get it printed. Your notes are ready and you can go ahead with reading them. Now about English, well English is one single subject that has far reaching influence directly or indirectly on your success in examination for entry in Central Superior Services of Pakistan because you need to attempt almost all your papers in English. Having understood the importance this subject, you need to practice your English as much as you can. In case of English, keep writing…writing and writing. By saying it thrice, I want to make a strong point that it’s your practice that will help you a lot. Apart from this, it will be great if you could show your write ups to some qualifiers and he gives you the feedback.

About I.R. and Parkash Chandra, yes it is a little complex when you read it for the start first time but believe me once you get to reading it, it will really provide the required gear to pass this subject in CSS Pakistan examination. About book regarding for Sociology, a book named Sociology and social problems by Abdul Hameed Taga is good.

I’m a student of B.com and I’m also thinking to do css after that. So, sir plz tell me what is extra thing that I should to do in my studies.
Waqas

Dear Waqar,

First of all good luck with your B.Com and your intention to appear in Central Superior Services (CSS) entry examination Pakistan. In your case, at the moment your primary concern should stay your B. Com studies but still you can start with planning for CSS and preparation. I would like to advise you to start practicing your English written skills and you will notice that by the time you will be eligible for appearance in examination, you will face very little difficulty, get hold of diary and start penning down your thoughts every night before going to bad. You can start writing with your day to day life. I used to do it too when I was a student in medical school and it helped me a lot too. Apart from this, you must develop the habit of reading newspaper daily. I will recommend Dawn when it comes to newspapers around. Once again, I will emphasize that at the moment your primary concern should stay your B. Com degree.

Dear Dr. Farrukh Malik
Asalam-o-Walaikum
Hope you are fine and shine. I am a candidate for CSS-2008 and it is my first attempt. FPSC for the first time mentioned the condition for 4000-5000 in 2007 Essay paper. As you have cleared the written part of exam; therefore, I would like to know:
1. What was the length of your Essay with approximate total words and number of pages?
2. How much time did you give for the outline?
3. Which Essay did you attempt?
I would be very much grateful if you take some of your precious time in answering above queries.
Thanks,
regards
Aamir Shah

Dear Aamir Shah,

It felt good to read your message. Here you go with my reply to your queries:

When I attempted the Essay paper, I wrote around thirteen pages and the words were approximately 4000-5000. I happened to discuss this issue of limitation of words with friends around. They believe that one need to write to the point, once his written script is good, no problem with the word limit but still, I would like to advise you to please take care of limitations specified while writing. I think 4000-5000 words are enough to impress the examiner and unnecessary expansion will not do any good. About outline, in my case, I made an outline on rough page initially (last page can be used for rough work) and wrote the essay following that outline. I spent around 20 minutes on making the outline and left the first page empty. Latter, when I was done with writing the complete essay, I wrote the proper outline, on first page that I left empty in first place. I wrote this outline keeping in view my complete write up. I think this trick is very good and you will cover all your points in outline accordingly. In CE-2007, I wrote an essay about education.

hi sir.well i m kinda newin here .i bascially want to do css..i m medical student n im in 3rd yr.i can do BSC this yr.plz i want to prepare for css plz just tell me all what i hav to do.i hv no othr guidness.or giv me any deatiled website foe this
Sehrish

Hello Sehrish,

It is nice meeting a new comer and it felt equally good to find an aspirant who belongs to my parent field of medicine. I think Bsc. And BA can help but would like to point it out that you can still appear in CSS examination on the basis of your MBBS degree but to be on the safe side, I will advise you to go for BA since Bsc. can only be done as a regular candidate. In your case, I would like say the same that I advised to Waqar that at the moment your professional degree should stay on top in your priority list but still you can plan and prepare side by side with your medical studies. Keep practicing your written skills of English and develop a habit of reading daily Dawn, it will help you a lot in your future pursuits. Here, I would like to tell you that when I was a medical student, I never thought to appear in CSS examination but after my graduation, I started preparing and got through it. I hope you will get through it too. Being a medical student you do have few advantages and I am putting them here. Firstly, Medical students/doctors are having a great deal of stamina to study and you can use it to your advantage when it comes to your preparation for CSS. Secondly, you will have an edge over others when it comes to Everyday Science since around 45 per cent of everyday science paper is related to human physiology. In the last, I would say go ahead with practicing written English and read the newspapers everything will go fine. I wish you good luck!

    Hello

I’m in my last semester of Software Engineering and will be done in next 3 months Inshallah. I want to start my CSS preparation for Exams in 2009 as soon as i get done with it. I was planning to give it this time too but couldn’t prepare myself with university workload. But now I’m all ready for giving it my time.

My area of interest is “Foreign Services of Pakistan”. I would like to know which subject should i choose and which one book from that particular course should be my priority?

    Regards
    Wafa Khan

    Hi Sir,
My name is dr ghulam asghar. i m an aspirant for 2008. Main difficulties in my case is precis and composition. i feel entangled at synon, word pairs and idioms. Plz tell me what do examiners mean when they say make a sentence from these words to elaborate its meaning. As far as i understand most words have more than one meaning for if we bring out its meaning in a sentence which doesnt satisfy examiners viewpoint, then we are surely in trouble and if we write down meaning of a word first and then make a sentence we are in trouble for doing what is not explicitly mentioned in a paper where its only mentioned to make a sentence to bring its meaning.
so what does ur analysis say about this issue?
    regards
    dr. ghulam asghar

this one book policy is a stupid idea. if going through more than one book confuses u, u better not appear in css. good qaulity reading is what is required to develope cognitive skills for making an attemp at css. these suhaiul bhatti type books are never good enough when it comes to attempt a question which requires the candiddate to furnish a sound independent opinion e.g. why was jinnah the face of muslim nationalism mhen he was secular in disposition and aristicratic in manners?
the candiddate himself has to decide what suits him the most. satisfaction in preparation is crucial. if your comprehension is good and cramming is not your tool for success , go for good, reserach oroiented studies….
Tip: compulsory shall make you or break you

  10. Dr Farrukh Malik on March 28th, 2008 12:04 pm

    @Taimur:
Stupid it may sound to you but I am talking out of my personal experience of appearing in exam and passing it. If someone intend to follow some other pattern like yours, it might suit him or you only.
Thanks for your comment and keep visiting Silence, we need sincere comments of fellows like you.
