The pain that she must have gone through can not be captured in mere words. When they brought Purposh to Karachi for treating her burns, doctors might have felt the agony while declaring that her 75% of body is burnt and it is very difficult for her to survive. According to rule of nine used by Doctors for determination of extent of burns and prognosis; with percentage increase in burnt surface area of the victim, the chances of survival decrease. Doctors were right and she succumbed to death after fighting for life and this fight continued no more than 2-3 days.

Nineteen years old and mother of a baby girl Purposh was married to Farhan Bhatti one and a half year back and started living with his family at Sehrish Nagar, Qasimabad Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. It is reported that this marriage was an out come of a tradition in Sindh Pakistan named ‘Badi’. Badi means sort of an exchange and according to this tradition people use to exchange ladies for marriage between families. Farhan has a younger sister Reema who was married to Purposh’s brother Aijaz and against that Purposh was tied in nuptial bond with Farhan. It is further told that Reema at the time of marriage was too young to have a sexual relation so it was decided that she will be sent to her in laws after some two years or so. According to close family associates, Reema was the root cause of crisis because Aijaz was forcing his in laws to let Reema go with him but they were not ready to do so. This resulted in deterioration of relationship between families and Purposh used to get beaten by her in laws since she used to advocate her brother. This went on for sometime and ended in this tragedy of burning followed by death of Purposh.

The neighbors told media that they heard cries of help early in the morning. They started following the cries and found that they were coming from the house of Mr. Imam Ali the father of Farhan. They broke into the house and found that Purposh was set on fire. They took the victim to civil hospital Hyderabad where she, in presence of lady doctor, gave the statement that her mother in law Rehana and her husband are responsible for all that happened since they forcedly sprayed kerosene oil on her and set her on fire. Latter, due to her worsening condition, she was shifted to Karachi where she died.

It is reported that a FIR has been lodged against Purposh’s husband Farhan, his mother Rehana and sister Reema for murder of Purposh. Farhan was arrested on railway station Hyderabad while trying to make an escape the other alleged and mother of Farhan is still missing.

Domestic violence is a sour reality and every year hundreds of women lose their lives due to this menace. It is not confined to any specific area or country since such cases get reported around the world but it very important to note that countries with low literacy get more of these incidents.

Be it low literacy rate or something else, it is a proven fact that such things are happening around and no one dare fight it. People though are vocal enough to condemn such things but they are not ready to take practical steps. For that matter, when cases like that of Purposh get reported, it is the duty of government to take them on priority basis and bring justice to the victims by giving severe punishments to those who are involved in this crime. Only then situation will change.

    Asalaamoalaikum,
Thank you for sharing this story. It would be helpful, if you also shared a resolution or a prevention given those circumstances.
For example, what would you do to prevent such future happenings in the circumstances and the geographic/cultural area that you live in?
Please read “Child Abuse” on my blog and comment if any of that would be applicable where you are?
jazaaik ALlah hu Khairan, May Allah reward you for your efforts.
