Yesterday was the day, I have been waiting for so long. Its was the day when examination of CSS started with two of the most difficult and important subjects, none other than English essay and English precis and composition. The time allowed for one paper was there hours and both made it 6. The first paper started at 9 O’ clock sharp. The topics for essay where easier as compared to last year and I did better this time. I wrote about the education system of Pakistan. The day before yesterday, I mean March 23rds special supplement was carrying an article about education in Pakistan by Prof. Zakia Sarwar and it helped me alot while attempting my paper but no body can claim anything about the results of such examinations. About English Precis and Composition paper, it was also easier from the last year’s paper and I hope I will stay successful but uncertainity is commonplace while talking about the results of CSS in Pakistan.
The day passed and was very hectic to write and write and write for six hours. Now I am getting ready for the tommorow’s paper i.e. Everyday Science and Current Affairs. Being a student of science, I am quite good at Everyday science but dont know if I will be able to perform equally good and current affair, I have prepared well. Lets see what will happen? Pray for me!

Dear Mohsin, today I got free from my exams and there you go. You wanted to know about the first step towards preparation. Well the first step to prepare for CSS is rationalizing your decision to take the exam and then you can plan forward. Think about it hundered times, its not bed of roses since failure rates are high and you never know your position exactly, its very uncertain and stressfull. Once you have decided do let me know and I will guide you through. Good luck!

  20. drfarrukhhmalik on August 22nd, 2007 8:00 pm

    Dear Zara,

If your are not good at URDU don’t try to take risk on it. As you have told me you do have the option of Indo-Pak History, I think its not that bad. I had Indo-Pak history as my optional in the exam and I was able to score good. About reading material, if you a reader who use to concentrate, only one book can do the whole thing but you need the proper guidence for that. Rest you are ready to go.
Any further inquiries, you are more than welcome

  21. drfarrukhhmalik on August 22nd, 2007 8:05 pm

Zara can I ask one thing, have you any prior exposure of Political Science with reference to CSS exam. For most of the candidates this subject use to give a real tough time. I do have a suggest, think about Public Admin and Journalism. My personal experience dictates that these two subjects can prove a life line for candidates. Rest one has to decide himself.

  22. zara on August 22nd, 2007 9:59 pm

i just choose this subject as optional paper because i did MA in political science and also my pol sc iz my favourit subj and i select international law and constitutional law because i did LLB.but i m now confuse in choosng urdu and history of pak and india can u help me in choosing subj b/w the 2 which will b 4 me and which i should i choose but one thing which i want to make clear that i hv,nt any interest n urdu subj.
and thanx for such rapid and quick reply.wish u best of luck

  23. drfarrukhhmalik on August 22nd, 2007 10:03 pm

Zara Indo-Pak History is a better sub as compared to Urdu thats what I think out of your reply. Zara may I know at the moment where you are stationed since Lahore is the best place to prepare for exams.

  24. zara on August 23rd, 2007 10:05 pm

    hi dr sahab

is it possible for a simple gradute to qualify the css exams.if he can then what strategy should he use.plz ans.me

  26. drfarrukhhmalik on September 6th, 2007 5:52 pm

For CSS exam eligibility is graduation and it means a graduate can qualify it. Strategy, it varies from person to person since aptitude varies. One thing is clear, one needs alot of hard work to put in order to pass.

  31. azam khan on October 1st, 2007 11:40 am

    hi evryone,
i was among 2007 css competitors, and was hopeful enough ,but alas i could not get through.
i congratulate dr.farrukh who made to be one of the few.
i had opted for pol.science ,islamic history ,consttional law and pashto.now i m thinking to replace one of these papers of 200 marks with two new subjects of IR and public admnstration ,each carrying 100 marks.i m seeking expert opinion to help me make maximum prep for qualifying 2008 with distinction. thanx

  32. drfarrukhhmalik on October 1st, 2007 3:43 pm

@Azeem Khan: It will be a pleasure to help you. Do let me know if you need any assistance.

  33. azam khan on October 2nd, 2007 5:23 pm

    mr.farrukh,
of course i welcome people like u.i m thinking to opt for 100 marks papers like public admstration and IR instead of islamic hstory or p.science, both of them i had opted recently. how will b that ?bcoz i think the main advantages will be of limited sylabus and relaxed schedule of exam comparatively. furthermore i ‘ve not got dmc yet, which ‘ll be more helpful n dtermining my strategy.
    another question farrukh,
what s the best way to prepare fa english precise paper.bcoz the syllabus for that particlarly vocablary and idioms s very scattered.i hope precise suggestion.thnx

  34. drfarrukhhmalik on October 2nd, 2007 6:58 pm

Public Admin and IR were my subject too. They are good. DMC are available at FPSC website you can put your roll no. and get the result. For precise you need to practice and for vocablary and idioms you keep reading the good stuff or daily Dawn. Good luck!

  39. drfarrukhhmalik on October 4th, 2007 6:42 am

Dear Monaza, Its nothing about being in airs, I was about to write to you but you followed emotionalism. Your attitude is objectionable. About your subjects, I had only Journalism from amongst them and I can tell you about it only. Kindly read my recipe and you will find your answers. Thanks!

  40. azam khan on October 4th, 2007 9:52 am

    dear monazza,
u did not ask me but saw ur anger therefore mistaking to interrupt u.as u did better n english and this s ur subject therefore u should think over it to opt for it.
journalism ,sociology and any regional language are among the subjects which bring better marks.
furthermore , preparation starts its journey from study, and think as tomorrow u r going to the exam hall for paper.syllabus can be obtained from fpsc website and is also includeded in the the css guide books available n the market.after studying the sylabus of the subjects n ur mind u ‘ll be n best position to make choice in the subjects.the student of english have big share in css among passed.
go and take the step not today but now.u have the guts to qualify but preparation s the tool.
    good luck.

  44. drfarrukhhmalik on October 4th, 2007 2:43 pm

Well Waqas, History of India and Paksitan was my subject too and I think its a good one. About Pl Sc. and Eco. I have no idea. Since u have educational background that relates to economics it will help you out. My sincere advice to you is that you should get hold of past papers of your subjects and have a look at them only then you can have an idea about the subjects

  47. drfarrukhhmalik on October 6th, 2007 1:11 pm

@Monaza: Its ok ma’am, let me tell you one thing, staying tense will not help you alot, The thing that you need is strong will and a objective approach towards this exam. All my sincere wishes are with you and do let me know whenever and where ever you need my assistance.

One thing more, I have noticed that you use to write in a manner that will only deteriorate your writing skills, I am talking about net lingo, the short cuts we use to use in cyberspace. Kindly avoid them for time being and you will notice the improvement. Try to write in complete sentences.

    I wish you good luck!

  48. azam khan on October 7th, 2007 10:10 pm

    dear monazza,
it s my pleasure to be a source of encouragement to u.but remember one thing which must be remembered that the self confidence and mental maturity s the key for an administration, which the commision need to see n potential officer fa recomndation.
initiative s the step u would have to take by urself and just start.i ‘ll also join css 2008 as my second attempt.one thing more that the practical step s the key and that should be taken now, bcoz i lament f this 2nd attempt would have my 3rd attempt, therefore ,take the step and go ahead ,once again and again and again best of luck .

  49. monaza on October 9th, 2007 10:34 am

  51. azam khan on October 9th, 2007 7:37 pm

    monaza,
very good that u have taken practical step.
i feel contenment that i have contributed in motivation of a person in her journey towards the superior office.
as far as the schedule s concerned ,i have no disciplined daily routine these days, specialy bcoz of ramzan.
furthermore everyone has specific psychology according to climatic ,social factors.
you should make ur strategy acording to ur own convenience.
the important thing is the more u study ,the more u r forwarding ur position.there s no shortcut n study.
one thing i want to suggest that trust n god ,give much time to prayer, try ur best to get up early n the morning bfore azane fajr, pay nawafil prayer ,and fajr during ur study.study early n the mrning give best results, more u should act acording to ur sweet well.
    s it ok ?

  52. drfarrukhhmalik on October 10th, 2007 6:07 am

    Regards

  63. drfarrukhhmalik on October 18th, 2007 2:59 am

@Abdul Jabbar: Brother thanks. By the way you were in which batch of CMC???

@Hisham: Your first step must be stepping ahead with justifying your optionals by looking at the past papers of CSS. Moreover, you might want to read daily Dawn punctually. This is the first step and do let me know if you need any further assistance.

  64. Rabia on October 22nd, 2007 9:37 am

I have done bachelors in computing. Kindly tell me how to prepare for CSS exams. There are so many books available in the market or should I prepare for CSS exams from an academy. 5 months is enough for exam preparation?

  65. drfarrukhhmalik on October 22nd, 2007 10:22 am

@Rabia: The duration for preparation varies from person to person depending upon his/her educational background, concentration span, aptitude, determination and motivation so can’t say it fr sure regarding you. To me 5 months are enough and in your case only you can say anything with certainty. Now let get to your second query, you can follow the following post of mine to get the first hand information on how to prepare:
