CSS-2007

FPSC announced 24th March 2007 as the date for competitive exam (CSS). Now starts my real time when I got to focus with all my potential so that I can make it this time. Last time (CSS 2006) I appeared with a preparation of just three months only and got failed in one subject out of 12 only. Let’s see what my fate will dictate this time. Besides, I am working on some other projects too that makes it harder. I have started dedicating most of my time to CSS, it feels as if I am under house arrest with books, maps, laptop internet…. all around and only green pasture in my deserted life is this blog and your interaction.
Your prayers are worth and hope to receive loads!!!!!!

Dear Ademah, For CSS one must read a good Daily like Dawn, if you are habitual of reading DAWN you will be having an edge and it will help you in solving more 50% of CSS papers(so tells my experience). About rules, you can visit the website of FPSC that is http://www.fpsc.gov.pk Moreover buy some book for sylabus (Fareedi and Dogar sons are some good publishers) and inorder to choose optional subjects you need to buy a book containing the unsolved past papers so that you can have some idea. Having choosen the optional subjects you can search for books dealing those subjects. Let me tell you about compulsary subject. You have got to appear compulsarily for 1. English Essay : 100 marks (Read opinion Pages of DAWN)
    2. English comprehension: 100 marks (go for High School grammer by Wren and Martin)
    3. General knowledge : Pakistan Affairs 100 marks (Book by Bhatti Sons Pakistan Affairs is good one)
    4. General Knowledge : Everyday Science 100 marks (Book by Fareedi: Encyclopedia of Everyday Science or Encarta CD)
    5. General Knowledge : Current Affairs 100 marks (Dawn again)
    6. Islamiyat: 100 marks (Dawn friday column and book by any good author I am reading one by Imtiaz Shahid)

About optional subjects do let me knw your subjects and I will help you out.
    Good luck!

  11. Rabia on March 2nd, 2007 8:39 pm

    Salams Dr.Malik,
I found your information on CSS exams really helpful.
I’m not sure if you could help me in finding out how the age limit” thing works for the exam. I am from Balochistan and I think, from what I’ve heard, that we are allowed an upper limit of 2 years.. so basically, i would be allowed to take the exam until i’ve reached the age of 30.
My question is, are the exams taken only once a year and is it always around March and April? I’m 28 and would be turning 29 in October 2008. Will I be able to take the exam next year? I’ll be turning 30 in October 2008. And what about taking it in 2009? If the age limit is 30, and the exams are still held in March/April, will it be possible to appear for the exam in 2009?

I would greatly appreciate your help..
    Thanks..

  13. Dr Farrukh Malik on April 1st, 2007 3:08 am

@Asad: I am busy with my exams, I will get back to you on it soon.

  14. Jia on April 23rd, 2007 1:23 am

Hi am Jia frm Rawalpindi, i need to know about which optional subjects i should opt for the CSS exams and when is the next exam going to be held? I am in the last semester of MBA ,(Thesis).

  15. drfarrukhhmalik on April 25th, 2007 1:50 am

It is not sure that when the next exams will be held, keep in mind that you have only 9 months left only then you can plan and prepare.

About which optional subject is appropriate for you: The subject list is available in the sylabus…or you can get hold of some book like that of Dogar or Fareedi and after seeing the complete list choose according to your interest and then get hold of the unsolved question papers of the optional subjects. See the questions in the past papers and have an idea. It will help you to choose the opt subjects for the ultimate game…the exams!!!!! Best of luck.

  16. saara on May 16th, 2007 6:09 am

hi im saara, dr farukh i really need solid info from someone who has given css and you seem to know things. in 5th aug 2007 i will be turning 27 and live in lahore.i was told that i have only one attempt to make it in exams and interview by 2008 cuz in the next papers i will not be eligible age wise.i have a baby to look after too and have family crisis in terms of marriage that i think i have to give css to secure my future. its on my mind all the time. can you tell me being a student who works less n scores above than average and who has a baby of 1 year ..how long do i have to devote to studies and what are the chances of clearing in the 1st attempt? cuz if i put in all the months n eventually fail ..i wont be eligible to reattempt even if i want…a big problem i guess.. any way out ? how many hours min do i need to spend on the average? plz help me. n any idea when the exams are in 2008?if one fails in the interview ..n ur age exceeds then are u eligble to reapply n if u are then do u have to give all the papers again too?

  17. drfarrukhhmalik on May 20th, 2007 6:22 pm

    Hi Saara,

I am answering your queries one by one:

    >I will be turning 27 and live in lahore.i was told that i have only one attempt to make it in >exams and interview by 2008 cuz in the next papers i will not be eligible age wise.

You are right and you do have only one attempt left due to your age. For the next attempt, according to the recent notification of FPSC, the cut off age for CSS-2008 will be Jan 2008 so one ought to be below 28 by Jan 2008 for taking CSS.

    >It’s on my mind all the time. can you tell me being a student who works less n scores above >than average and who has a baby of 1 year:

Well I do have many such examples who have done very good beside they had many similar issues. So don’t worry, prepare well and you will get through it.

    >how long do i have to devote to studies and what are the chances of clearing in the 1st >attempt?

Well chances of clearing depend upon your preparation. I think you can do it!

    >how many hours min do i need to spend on the average?

I don’t know your educational background that’s why can’t comment on it but one ought to devote every bit of time for this achievement.

    >any idea when the exams are in 2008?

Exact dates are not known but according to FPSC notification, it will be in March 2008.

    >if one fails in the interview ..n ur age exceeds then are u eligble to reapply n if u are >then do u have to give all the papers again too?

Yes if one fails in interview he has got to give the papers again more over if crosses the age limit, he is not eligible.

Few Suggestions that can help you:

You are from Lahore, you can join some couching academy. Two are the top most and I think it will help you. One is located in Garden Town near Barkat Market named Officers Academy. The other one is in Johar Town namely KIPS. You can go and join. If you want to appear in 2008 that is the only chance you do have, you need to start working from now.

I wish you best of luck and I hope you can make it! Any thing else you can write me here!

  18. Mian Khurram on July 14th, 2007 2:48 pm

i want to know the phone number of KIPS and Officers Academy sir

koi mujh ko bata skta hain kay main optional main kia subject rakhoun?

  24. drfarrukhhmalik on September 15th, 2007 4:51 pm

Well for decision to choose optional subject you need to look at your strong and weak points, your background knowledge and ability to study a subject. Only then you can be able to step ahead. In my view no body can dictate you but can help you choose the subject appropriate for you.

    Hello evry1,

Thank u so much 4 helping me out of this problem.i was actually worried about the selection of subjects for CSS.i have seen 15 subjects in one website,6 are compulsory & other are divided in the groups.well thats why i am still not sure that how many subjects we need in CSS or can we choose any subject from those lists?

    hoping 4 a favourable response,

  28. drfarrukhhmalik on September 21st, 2007 10:22 pm

    @ Munazza:

Yes you are right that you have got to go for 6 compulsary subjects. In case of optional subjects you need to go according to groups of subjects and you can only take the subjects acc to a set proportion that can be found in guidelines available in every CSS related sylabuss book like Dogar’s or Fareedi’s and you have to select the subject in a way to complete 600 hundered marks since the total marks are 1200. I think you are clear with this issue. Best of luck!

    Hi,hop u r dng well.
    Actually I wan sum buddiez advice (who hav done with CSS paperz) on my subject selection;
    i Choose these subjects;
    Computer Science, Business Administration,
History of India & Pak & Political Science.
As i hav told u i hav Computers Background so choosing from History like stuff was really difficult for me. Still i dono i made right choice or not, but i don hav any options here. Plz tell me my choice is right or i shud revise it from paperz point of view?
    Regards,
    Munazza

  41. drfarrukhhmalik on November 1st, 2007 9:54 pm

    @Munazza:
My advice in your case is that, that you should buy the past papers of optional subjects, have a look at the papers of your choice and only than you can make any decision. Rest your selection is not bad unless you can deal with them.
